The City of Alexandria is an independent city with no county affiliation and derives its governing authority from a Charter granted by the Virginia General Assembly. Virginia is a Dillon Rule state, allowing local governments only the authority expressly granted to them by the Virginia Constitution or by the Virginia General Assembly in the City Charter or in general law. City Council is the governing body, which formulates policies for the administration of the City. The mayor is chosen on a separate ballot and presides over sessions of the Council. Alexandria is a Council/Manager form of government.

Overview
RPCA supports the well-being of Alexandria\'s residents by ensuring access to a variety of quality recreation, park, and cultural experiences. There are over 900 acres of publicly accessible open space (this includes both public and private land that is open for public use), 51 programmed recreation and park facilities, hundreds of classes, an arts center, and a City Marina. The Department is comprised of four operating Divisions: Recreation Services, Leadership & Management, Cultural Activities and Park Services. These four Divisions work to offer the full range of programs, services, facilities, and parks.

Under the supervision of the Recreation Manager, the Temporary Recreation Leader I will assist with officiating the department\'s Youth Basketball League for ages seven & eight. The successful candidate will be knowledgeable about basketball, be passionate about working in the community and possess effective communication and excellent customer service skills.

What You Should Bring
Each member of the team is accountable for the outstanding delivery of services to the community. You will work to meet the needs of our community. You will have the support of and work under the direction of the Regional Program Director and/or Recreation Manager I. The hours will vary and be outside of standard business hours.

The Temporary Recreation Leader I - Youth Basketball Official will:
  • Develop positive relationships with players, coaches, parents, and staff.
  • Demonstrate ability to officiate athletic contests in a fair and impartial manner.
  • Gain experience in the sports management field.
  • Maintain continuous watch of participants to prevent injury and minimize or eliminate an emergency.
  • Observes and enforces facility rules and regulations.
  • Assists with the set-up and break-down of athletic contests.
  • Function effectively as a team member.
  • Provide exceptional customer service to internal and external customers.
  • Attend scheduled staff meetings and trainings.
  • Perform related work as required.
Minimum & Additional Requirements

High school student in good standing. Some experience participating or leading recreational and cultural activities in arts and crafts, sports, games, music, drama, cooking, physical fitness, mindfulness, swimming and water play activities, STEAM activities, and field trips, or any equivalent combination of experience and
training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
