The Opportunity:

The Public Health Vector Specialist Trainee assists with monitoring mosquito, rodent, and other vector populations to evaluate treatment needs and requirements, reduce development sites, minimize the potential for disease transmission, and enhance community livability. They provide education and technical assistance to the public and other stakeholders on how they can reduce vectors and protect themselves from vector-borne disease.

As the Public Health Vector Specialist Trainee, you will learn to:


  • Respond to complaints, perform inspections, and educate responsible parties on the principles of Integrated Pest Management

  • Inspect and monitor residential, commercial, and public properties for signs of rodent activity

  • Assist in building relationships with partner agencies, homeowner associations, property owners, and stakeholders to provide education and assistance in mitigating vector issues.

  • Work with agencies and residents within houseless camps to reduce the risk of exposure to rodent borne diseases

  • Conduct rodent monitoring and mitigation using mechanical and chemical methods

  • Assist with the trapping and testing of live rodents for disease surveillance using American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) standards for humane treatment and euthanasia

  • Survey sites and collect samples to monitor vector populations, reduce development sites, and decrease the potential for disease.

  • Safely apply pesticide treatments using a variety of mechanical equipment and operate various types of vehicles and boats.

  • Maintain clear, detailed, and timely records of work and inspections performed

  • Compile inspection reports; track geographical areas where inspections have occurred and/or pesticides have been applied utilizing databases and GIS based mapping software

  • Analyze and interpret data to recognize trends and determine the most effective integrated vector/pest control method

Minimum Qualifications/Transferable Skills*:
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be as noted below. All non-traditional education, training and experience will be evaluated.

Education/Experience:

  • An Associate\'s degree or equivalent, OR

  • Completion of 1+ year of college-level courses AND

  • One year of experience performing field or outdoor work or in areas such as public health, pest control, epidemiology, environmental health, environmental science or related fields, OR

  • Two years experience in above fields of work


Other:

  • A valid driver\xe2\x80\x99s license and ability to drive a County owned truck.

  • Possession of or ability to attain an Oregon Public Pesticide Applicators License, an Oregon Boater Education Card, and an ATV Safety Card within 12 months of hire.

  • Ability to work outdoors in all conditions and navigate multiple types of terrain while carrying up to 50 lbs of equipment.


Preferred Qualifications/Transferable Skills*: You do not need to have the following preferred qualifications/ transferable skills to qualify. However, keep in mind we may consider some or all of the following when identifying the most qualified candidates. Please clearly explain on your application how you meet any of the following preferred qualifications/transferable skills.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of IPM principles and their application

  • Experience working in rodent control and/or mosquito abatement

  • Experience working with GIS and Google suite

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse populations

  • Knowledge of de-escalation techniques, conflict management, and using a trauma informed approach

  • Transferable skills: Your transferable skills are any skills you have gained through education, work experience (including the military) or life experiences that are relevant for this position. Be sure to describe any transferable skills on your application and clearly explain how they apply to this position.
