Abhaya Wellness is seeking a dedicated and skilled Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) or Physician Assistant (PA) with experience or interest in addiction psychiatry to join our outpatient team. The ideal provider will deliver compassionate, evidence-based psychiatric and substance use treatment for individuals with substance use disorders and co-occurring psychiatric conditions as well as for individuals with general psychiatric diagnoses.
This will be performed in a supportive, team-based environment and serving patients in the clinic's mindfulness-based substance use disorder intensive outpatient program (IOP) as well as general psychiatric outpatients.
This is a contract position*
Key Responsibilities:
Perform thorough psychiatric evaluations and substance use disorder assessments while formulating differential diagnoses
Develop and implement individualized treatment plans, including pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic interventions
Provide psychoeducation to clients and families regarding medications and treatment plans
Initiate and manage medications for substance use disorders (including medication assisted treatment) and psychiatric co-morbidities
Monitor patient progress, treatment adherence, and side effects through regular follow-ups
Collaborate closely with therapists, peer recovery specialists, and shared providers in the community
Provide education on harm reduction, overdose prevention (e.g., naloxone), and relapse prevention strategies
Participate in team meetings, case reviews, and interdisciplinary care planning
Maintain complete, timely, and accurate documentation in the electronic health record (EHR)
Ensure compliance with all state and federal regulations related to controlled substance prescribing
Practice of evidence-based medicine
Adhere to clinic policies, professional standards, and regulatory requirements
Work closely with the clinic's medical director
A dedication to continuing to grow and learn within your practice of medicine
Required Qualifications:
Active and unrestricted licensure as a PMHNP or PA in North Carolina
National Board Certification
Current DEA (Drug Enforcement Agency) registration
At least one year of outpatient psychiatric experience
Excellent communication, decision-making, and communication skills
Preferred Qualifications:
A current personal mindfulness practice and interest in mindfulness based treatment modalities
Prior experience in addiction medicine, community mental health, or dual-diagnosis care
Familiarity with evidence-based models such as SBIRT, harm reduction, or motivational interviewing
Experience using EHR systems
Bilingual or multilingual abilities a plus

Outpatient clinic with additional telehealth availability
