The mission of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Providence is "to enable and inspire children and teens, especially those from diverse or disadvantaged circumstances, to reach their full potential as productive, responsible, and healthy members of their community, the State of Rhode Island, and the nation." Founded in 1868, we are the oldest continuously-operating Boys & Girls Club organization in the United States. Today we serve nearly 4,000 young people of ages 5-18 annually, with 8 service sites around the city.
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Providence seeks a Program Assistant/Gym to supervise gym activities afterschool at Alvarez High School in Providence.
21st Century Community Learning Center (21st-CCLC) at Dr. Jorge Alvarez High School:
The 21st-CCLC at Alvarez High School is a partnership between the Boys & Girls Clubs of Providence, the RI Department of Education, and Providence Public Schools. This collaborative effort brings a city-wide approach to increasing opportunities for learning after school and in the summer. 21st-CCLC programming helps young people discover what they are passionate about. Activities include school-year programs organized in seasonal blocks ("sessions"), a summer program, daily free meal, family engagement events and other special events. The
Program Assistant/Gym
will supervise gym activities, as well as helping with the daily logistics of the program, including attendance-taking, supervision of student participants, arrival and dismissal procedures, support of program providers, communications, and organizing supplies.
Program Assistant hours
Monday through Thursday 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM. There are also regular opportunities to sub at one of our other 7 sites on Fridays if desired (not required).
This is a seasonal position for the school-year, but there are likely to also be summer employment opportunities available if mutually agreeable (with a required internal application and selection process).
Required qualifications:
High School diploma (some college preferred)
Must be at least 18 years old
At least one year of work experience in youth development, education, recreation or a related field.
Previous experience supervising teenagers.
Previous experience supervising gym activities such as basketball, indoor soccer, etc.
Background in sports as participant and/or coach helpful.
First Aid/CPR/AED current certification.
Ability to enforce safety policies and procedures.
Ability to lead and motivate teenagers to act with respect for themselves, other students, staff, their school and program.
Ability to engage with program participants in positive and appropriate ways, following BGCP's "Policies for the Protection of Youth."
Must be able to pass all background checks, including but not limited to: national background checks, State BCI, RI DCYF C.A.N.T.S., drug screen (for illegal drugs), reference checks, employment and education verification, and internet and social media searches as allowed by law.
Pre-employment orientation and safety trainings also required.
The following qualifications are
preferred but not required:
? Bilingual ability in Spanish and English (speak and write)
Current RI Chauffeur's License
