This position may be filled as:
  • DETAIL: The selected employee may be required to serve a trial detail prior to being permanently promoted.
  • PROBATIONAL APPOINTMENT: Current permanent status classified State employees may be required to accept a probational appointment, if selected.
  • TEMPORARY JOB APPOINTMENT: This position may be filled by temporary job appointment. If filled as a temporary job appointment, should a permanent position become available, the employee may be converted to a probational appointment.

SALARY DEPENDENS ON LEVEL OF EXPERIENCE
  • As part of a Career Progression Group, vacancies may be filled from this recruitment as a Professional Counselor 1, 2, 3 or 4 depending on the level of experience of the selected applicant(s).
    • The maximum salary for the Professional Counselor 4 is $80,267.00 per year annually.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION:
Registration as either a Provisional Licensed Professional Counselor or a Provisional Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist by the Louisiana Board of Licensed Professional Counselors. NOTE:
Pursuant to Act 484 of the 2014 Legislative Session and effective May 1, 2015, Counselor Interns are now called "Provisional Licensed Professional Counselors" (PLPCs) and MFT Interns are now called "Provisional Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists" (PLMFTs).
Job Concepts

Close from a licensed behavioral health professional or higher-level manager or administrator.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
None.

LOCATION OF WORK:
May be used by all state agencies.

JOB DISTINCTIONS:
Differs from the Social Service Counselor job series by presence of recognition as a Licensed Professional Counselor-Intern or a Marriage and Family Therapy Intern by the Louisiana Licensed Professional Counselors Board of Examiners.

Differs from the Professional Counselor 2 by the absence of greater independence and more complex caseloads.
Examples of Work

EXAMPLES LISTED BELOW INCLUDE BRIEF SAMPLES OF COMMON DUTIES ASSOCIATED WITH THIS JOB TITLE. PLEASE NOTE THAT NOT ALL TASKS ARE INCLUDED.

Obtains and prepares social histories of clients for information to be reviewed by treatment teams and for use in referrals to other agencies.

Participates in the decision making process of the treatment team including formulating therapeutic activities and recommending a treatment plan.

Manages a caseload by scheduling appointments, evaluating client progress in counseling sessions, and making recommendations to the treatment team.

Performs intensive individual interviews with patients experiencing crises and multiple situational problems.

Evaluates information in case records in order to recommend changes in psychosocial intervention.

Performs goal-directed and supportive individual and group interviews with clients experiencing crises or multiple situational problems.

Assists in the procurement of needs such as institutional placements, transportation, financial assistance, medical equipment, shelter, food, clothing, etc.

Serves as liaison between the client, family and the agency/institution.
