Production Editor, WaterBrook, Multnomah, Convergent, and Ink & Willow (Open to Remote)

Production Editorial at WaterBrook, Multnomah, Convergent Books (children\'s), and Ink & Willow seeks a Production Editor to oversee a variety of titles, from the initial transmittal of final manuscripts to bound books. From nonfiction and fiction to middle-grade graphic novels, young-reader picture books, and gift journals, the titles for which this role is responsible is an exciting, broad-ranging list. The Production Editor will work on an expansive list of fiction, nonfiction, illustrated children\'s projects, and gift products within the Christian market.

WaterBrook publishes books in the areas of practical life, motivation and inspiration, devotional and gift books, relationships and parenting, biography, memoir, topical Bible study, along with captivating works of fiction and children\'s books. WaterBrook is responsible for some of the most high-profile Christian publications of our time, including Jennie Allen\'s Get Out of Your Head, Tim Tebow\'s Mission Possible, Michael Todd\'s Relationship Goals, Andrew Peterson\'s Wingfeather series, and Lisa Tawn Bergren\'s God Gave Us You.

Multnomah publishes books in the areas of discipleship and spiritual growth, Christian living, Bible study, apologetics, theology, devotional, evangelism, leadership as well as children\'s books and works of uplifting fiction. Notable Multnomah titles include David Platt\'s Radical, Francine River\'s Redeeming Love, and Mark Batterson\'s Whisper.

Convergent Books children\'s titles encourage readers to ask important questions and helps to shape the way faith is expressed in the modern world. Current titles include Roma Downey\'s upcoming A Message in the Moon, What Is God Like? by Rachel Held Evans and Matthew Paul Turner, and Shay Youngblood\'s A Family Prayer.

Ink & Willow gift products are thoughtfully curated based on biblical truth and sparks a reminder of how God reveals beauty in the midst of our ordinary. Popular products include Our Daily Question, 52 Weeks of Gratitude, Bible Conversation Cards, and Enneagram Essentials.

The Production Editor will work closely with the editorial, design, and production groups, and will be responsible for handling a variety of titles, including some hardcover-to-paperback conversions but mostly original titles, from manuscript to bound book. The deadline-oriented team player will supervise the work of freelance copy editors, cold readers, proofreaders, sluggers, and indexers and provide their production editorial expertise during all phases of production, from copyedit to complete printed books and e-pub files.

We are looking for a detail-oriented, meticulous self-starter who has strong analytical skills, communicates clearly, and will be an active participant in a collaborative team. The ideal candidate will manage a diverse set of responsibilities efficiently and effectively and is comfortable asking for help when needed.

The Role:

  • Works with editors and authors to ensure the best quality book is produced, starting with the copy edit
  • Responsible for scheduling and assigning work to freelance copy editors, cold readers, proofreaders, and indexers as needed
  • Reviews freelancers\' work and authors\' changes and inputs corrections into electronic Word document or Adobe Acrobat PDF
  • Interacts with authors to ensure queries are answered and the final product meets the expectations of the authors, editors, and publisher. This includes using discretion to know when to query the editor first
  • Manages own list of production editorial work, as assigned by Copy Chief. This work may include additional copyediting, cold reading, or proofreading
  • Helps ensure books stay on schedule and error-free through all stages of production, often under tight deadlines
  • Ensures consistent house style and uses the Chicago Manual of Style, as needed
  • Proofread cover copy, jackets, back ads, and reprint corrections
  • Codes manuscripts for design, typesetting, and e-pubs
  • Resolves production editorial problems under supervision of the Managing Editor/Copy Chief.
  • Works in close conjunction with editorial, managing editorial, design, and production to help create timelines and troubleshoot project-related concerns and issues.
  • Provide feedback to freelancers as needed
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or required
The Essentials:
  • Comprehensive understanding of Christian Theology and Bible Scripture is a requirement for success in this role
  • Experience working with four-color art and an interest in children\'s books, preferred
  • 5-7 years of trade publishing experience in production editorial, including freelancing
  • Strong copyediting and proofreading skills
  • The ability to set and meet deadlines; multitasking successfully
  • Working knowledge of The Chicago Manual of Style, 17th edition
  • Very detail-oriented, with strong communication and writing skills
  • Enjoys working independently but can collaborate with internal and external stakeholders when needed
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word (especially the track changes function) and Adobe Acrobat PDF markup
The salary range for this position is $63,000 to $65,000. Full-time employees are eligible for our comprehensive benefits program.
