We are seeking a skilled and experienced chef for our Early Education Program's brand new farm-to-school food program. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in nutritient dense foods, menu planning, and kitchen management. This role offers an opportunity to showcase culinary expertise while managing all aspects of food preparation, menus, and kitchen operations in a private environment. We envision our chef working directly with our teaching staff and the young children they educate. Must have a sense of developmentally appropriate practice with children ages 1-8 years and be willing to participate in educational events including engaging young children in food preparation, hosting classroom kitchen visits, soliciting feedback from children and teachers on menus, etc. Must be comfortable and professional interacting with toddlers, preschoolers, school age children, teaching staff and families.
Responsibilities
Plan menus that utilize whole, local foods sourced from seasonal CSAs, and incorporate diverse cuisines
Prepare a nutritious morning snack and lunch tailored to program preferences for approximately 25-35 children and staff affiliated with our school
Serve food family style to 3 classrooms by specific times each day
Pick up CSA shares in Brattleboro and/or Dover
Manage inventory control, including ordering, stock rotation, and minimizing waste
Maintain cleanliness, safety, sanitation, and organization of the private kitchen area
Thoroughly clean up each day, including washing of any dishes used for food service and consumption
Additional responsibilities include willingness to participate in educational events (or host them!) and prepare family style dinners on occasion
Experience is very flexible but the following would be helpful to support this brand new program:
Familiarity with inventory management, food production processes, and cost control measures
Background in kitchen management
Exceptional cooking and baking skills across various cuisines with an emphasis on working with whole foods, diverse cuts of meat, and a variety of fruits, vegetables, and grains - yogurt and cheese making experience definitely a plus!
Ability to handle multiple responsibilities efficiently and work closely with others professionally and respectfully

This is a year round position, with paid time off during holiday breaks when our school is closed.
We expect this to be a daytime, salaried position, with 30 hours or less of actual work per week. Be out each day by 2pm. No late nights!
The food for the program is heavily grant funded. Our chef will work directly with local meat and vegetable producers and gain experience with farm-to-table cusine. Build community relationships and learn about food production.
The kitchen is BRAND NEW with high-quality appliances. A chef's dream!
