The City of Laramie is seeking a Principal Accountant to join our dedicated finance team. Under limited direction, the Principal Accountant will perform a wide range of responsible, confidential, and professional accounting, budgeting, and finance-related duties. This role will also serve as a liaison between City departments, staff, outside agencies, and the public, while taking a leadership role in managing and improving certain transaction processing systems. Outstanding project management and communications skills and knowing how to optimize work for efficiency are a must for this critical position that co-reports to the Finance Manager and Finance Director. Mentorship and development will be priorities for the successful candidate.
As a Principal Accountant, you will play a pivotal role in maintaining the City's financial integrity and transparency, helping ensure accurate financial reporting and supporting the implementation of key financial initiatives. Duties & Responsibilities:
Accounting & Financial Reporting:
Plan, prioritize, and deliver professional-level accounting, budgeting, and financial reporting services for the City of Laramie. Implement new accounting standards as assigned. Independently manage workload with minimal daily direction while meeting multiple deadlines and ensuring accuracy.
Transaction Processing & Analysis:
Review, reconcile, and analyze the general ledger for appropriate coding. Process transactions, prepare financial reports, analyze financial events, and make necessary journal entries or adjustments to accounting records. Make recommendations and implement improvements to transaction processing systems to optimize efficiency.
Problem Resolution & Data Integrity:
Proactively identify potential issues and resolve discrepancies in a timely manner to ensure the accuracy and integrity of financial data.
Accounting Software Management:
Lead and assist with the implementation and management of accounting software within assigned functions. Oversee the technical setup, workflow design, and system module maintenance. Monitor system performance and recommend improvements to optimize efficiency.
Key Financial Reports:
Work closely with the Finance Manager or Director to prepare essential financial reports, including the Annual Comprehensive Financial Report, the Recommended and Adopted Budget, and State Census. Prepare internal financial reports, such as monthly financial statements.
Qualifications:
Experience:
Minimum of seven (7) years of progressively responsible professional accounting experience, with a focus on accounting, financial reporting, or audit services. Two (2) years of experience in governmental accounting or auditing is preferred.
Education:
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Accounting or a closely related field.
Certification:
A Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Public Finance Officer (CPFO) certification or the ability to obtain one of these certifications within 18 months of hire.
