FULL TIME POSITION: PRESS SECRETARY \xe2\x80\x93 SSCS Organization: The NGO Sea Shepherd Conservation Society defends endangered species through Direct Action and government partnerships in some of the most fragile ecosystems on earth. Collectively, Sea Shepherd is the only navy in the world focused solely on protecting endangered marine wildlife. : The primary role of the Press Secretary is to ensure that Sea Shepherd\xe2\x80\x99s objectives and achievements are communicated efficiently and effectively to the media. The Press Secretary will plan and direct the Sea Shepherd\xe2\x80\x99s press strategy, respond to media inquiries, pitch stories, send press releases and manage press events. The Press Secretary will proactively and aggressively achieve accurate and positive press coverage of Sea Shepherd campaigns and activity. Planning, Implementing and Growth: Working with the Director of Communications, the Press Secretary will track relevant issues and coverage, compose press releases, quotes, statements, talking points, and web content. Proactively pitch stories and interviews to individual reporters, podcasts, and place op-eds in targeted media outlets. Build relationships with new and existing Sea Shepherd press contacts, continuously grow press lists and identify new media outlets and reporters to cover our stories. Generate Media Visits to Campaigns; Our ships, campaigns and crews are our best asset in communicating our mission and impact. The new Press Secretary must be enthusiastic about getting media onto our ships and embedded in our campaigns, continue to focus post-visit to ensure accuracy of content, strategize and coordinate interviews with Sea Shepherd leadership. Social Media and Digital; work with Social Media team to generate narratives, themes and continually drive the messaging around the unique role Sea Shepherd plays in protecting our oceans. Content Archiving and Licensing; facilitate media, documentary, and film requests for content from past campaigns and coordinate licensing thereof. This includes overall content archiving and storage. Preferred Skills:
  • Outstanding communication and writing skills
  • Experience working with the press
  • Outstanding attention to detail and the ability to juggle priorities and bring closure to work under tight deadlines
\xc2\xb7 Spanish language skills a plus Qualifications: Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college five (5) years of full-time paid experience in public relations, journalism or communications staff of non-profit/elected official/GOV agency. Proven track record of story placement and media relationship development. Fluency in data/analytics and distribution software such as Meltwater. Willingness to travel and directly manage press on our ships and in our campaigns. Location: Strong preference for Washington DC, hybrid work environment, 10-20% travel.
