Job Description

SUMMARY

:



This position is a two-year fellowship in which psychiatrists, postdoctoral psychologists, and behavioral scientists conduct independent research in the area of child mental health at Rhode Island Hospital. This includes didactic work, participation in ongoing funded projects, and independent research. Clinical experiences are also available for appropriate trainees.

The Coro Building, located in the Jewelry District of Providence, has become a hub of medical services and research, bridging the Brown University campus with the complex that includes Rhode Island Hospital, Hasbro Children's Hospital, and Women and Infants Hospital. For over 15 years, the Coro building has been operated by the academic medical center to house various forms of medical office and research space. The east side of the building now houses the Brown health corporate offices, while the west side houses numerous medical and medical research offices. The Coro Building is home to research and clinical activities of the much of the research in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.

PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

:

70% research time, 10% didactic time and up to 20% direct clinical work on a clinical research project as appropriate for the fellow.



The 70% research time will be spent on child mental health psychosocial and behavioral research for children, adolescents and young adults. The fellow will be matched with a research mentor based on their interests and experience and the availability of potential mentors. Individually tailored goals will be established. The Fellow will be exposed to various aspects of child mental health research through participation in the following activities:



Review of relevant literature and participation in research activities in the mentor's lab. The fellow will complete a small pilot project or examine data from the mentor's lab in a relevant area. Projects may involve behavioral, neuropsychiatric or biologic research. From this work, the Fellow will use prepare manuscripts and posters for national conferences. The fellow will develop and submit an NIH research proposal during the fellowship period (ideally at the end of the first year).



A formal didactic curriculum complements hands-on research and supervision. Core areas of learning include models of behavior and its change, behavioral assessment, and psychiatric and substance abuse disorders. Opportunities for training include research methods/design and statistical analysis; research ethics such as informed consent, research with minors and scientific integrity; and grant writing. A child mental health journal club and regular workshops/conferences sponsored by the Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior provides relevant didactics. The fellow will participate in any other required didactic experiences as part of their Brown fellowship.

BASIC KNOWLEDGE

:



Graduate or professional work or advanced degree; or equivalent experience.


For those from schools of psychology or public heath, completion of all requirements for a doctoral degree. In addition, for those in clinical psychology evidence of relevant clinical training at the graduate and internship level with attestation of completion provided by program director or diploma. For those with medical degrees, graduation from an approved medical program, and relevant residency training (e.g. psychiatry, pediatrics).

EXPERIENCE:





Completion of all requirements for PhD, Psy.D., DrPH, or M.D. from a relevant doctorate program and completion of a psychology internship or medical residency for those with clinical degrees.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:





Works in a hospital or university setting and office environment and may have frequent exposure to patient care.

INDEPENDENT ACTION:





Performs independently within the department's policies and practices. Refers specific complex problems to the supervisor when clarification of departmental policies and procedures are required.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:




Supervision of trainees is expected dependent upon research and clinical rotations.

$47,143.10-$77,818.83
