POSITION PURPOSE

Responsible for performing in a variety of environments, which may include inpatient or outpatient settings. Performs phlebotomy, specimen receiving, processing, sample distribution, computer order entry, and other pre-analytical tasks as required. Tracks specimens through appropriate computer functions to ensure that all specimens are routed accurately and in a timely manner.

Duties and skills necessary to register & check-in patients, obtain complete and accurate patient samples, obtain patient demographics, financial information, and diagnosis codes, and submit to the laboratory for testing.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES MAY INCLUDE:

DUTIES

Phlebotomy Collect blood samples using appropriate phlebotomy technique and following all policies related to handling of blood specimens.

Recognizes factors that affect specimen collection procedures and test results such as specific patient indicators, order of draw, and timed specimens.

Proficient in a variety of collection techniques such as vacutainer, syringe, butterfly, and capillary methods.

Carry hospital telephone or pager in order to respond to department needs including communication, staffing, and stats.

Receives and enters orders into EPIC and/or other health care systems.

Troubleshoots problems related to missing specimens, discrepancies between specimens and orders.

Performs Laboratory Information System (LIS) standard order entry.

Specimen Processing Determines in consultation with Med Tech acceptability of specimen (condition, timing, and container type, etc.)

Positively ID specimens against requisitions and labels specimens with accession number.

Completes specimen handling and processing including centrifuging all tubes and aliquoting.

Processes Microbiology, body fluid, and CSF specimens including detection of discrepancies or missing sources consulting with nursing station or physician as needed.

Follows test cancellation policy including when to complete EPRS and when to perform CTS (test cancellation). (EPRS not at Livonia Lab).

Knows when and where to look for specimens and how and when to add tests to previously collected specimens.

Retrieves results from laboratory computer and reports when appropriate.

Requests courier service via entry in MCE.

Reviews assigned documents in Softech in a timely manner

Performs and documents routine quality control of equipment (centrifuge, refrigerator temperatures). (Duty not required at Livingston & CCH)

Aliquots and adjusts pH of 24-hour urine specimens. (Duty not required at Livingston, Brighton & CCH)

RESPONSIBILITIES Acts as a representative of the department, communicating with patients, patient care units, and physician offices.

Understands and supports the Mission, Vision and Guiding Behaviors of SJMHS and the Department regarding commitment to quality patient care.

Provides quality patient care.

Responds to inquiries in a courteous and helpful manner following departmental policies, procedures, and systems.

Uses good judgment to identify issue and immediately work to correct and resolve concern. Triages problem or concern and advises a technologist, manager, or a pathologist, as necessary

Ability to read physician orders and verify patient identification to maintain logs and records, and to understand and follow written and verbal instructions

Actively participates with departmental and hospital meetings and committees.

Ensures that annual education and certifications, as required by the Hospital, are maintained. May assist with training or new hires, students and other colleagues.

Maintains good rapport and cooperative relationships to effectively communicate with patients and other health care professionals. Approaches conflict in a constructive manner. Helps to identify problems, offer solutions, and participate in their resolution.

Adheres to all hospital HIPAA and privacy policies.

Assumes responsibility of job duties in the safest possible manner, to assure personal safety of coworkers and patients, and to report preventable hazards and practices immediately to management.

Ensures a clean and safe workstation while maintaining PAR levels for current and future shifts, while stewarding of resources appropriately.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND CERTIFICATION/LICENSURE

Education:

One year of post-high school education in a related field and one year of clinical laboratory experience OR high school diploma or equivalent and two years of laboratory experience which includes specimen processing, computer data entry and phlebotomy.

Certification:

If performing phlebotomy, completion of Medical Assistant/Certified Nursing Assistant or Phlebotomy program or equivalent required.

A minimum of 3 months phlebotomy or working experience in a medical or health industry that provides comprehensive understanding of patient care.

Basic Life Safety (BLS) certified required for those working in satellite locations.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES Knowledge of reference sources for patient preparation and specimen collection and handling requirements to be able to assist other health care professionals.

Understands laboratory requisitions and how to locate missing or incomplete information. Collect blood samples using appropriate phlebotomy technique following all policies related to collection and handling of blood samples including order of draw and timed samples.

Analytical skills necessary to select the best site for obtaining blood.

Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail when performing job responsibilities.

Organizational skills necessary to prioritize work. Flexibility to accommodate task and location reassignment as needed.
