Job Description


Summary

Under the direction of the Director and/or Nurse Manager, the Perinatal Technician is responsible for providing direct and indirect patient care duties for a group of patients, from simple to complex, for the specialty population on the unit or department, under the guidance and supervision of the registered nurse. The Perinatal Technician provides surgical care to perinatal patients within the operating room under the supervision of a registered nurse and surgeons. The Perinatal Tech utilizes AORN Standards, Recommended Practices, and Guidelines as a reference to ensure quality, safety, and appropriateness of patient care.

Education

High school or equivalent (GED). Completion of a certificate program for Licensed Nursing Assistant. The Perinatal Tech is expected to receive formal training in the role of the Perinatal Tech within the first year of employment on The Family Place.

Certification, Registration & Licensure

Certification required: Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers certification, or equivalent course credentialed by American Heart Association.

Licensure required: Current New Hampshire State LNA license

Evidence of the ability to perform as a member of a team.

Responsibilities

Perinatal Tech Duties: Knowledge and skill in aseptic technique. Maintains the integrity of a sterile field during a cesarean section, tubal ligation, retained placenta and dilatation and curettage procedures. Has knowledge of equipment and supplies for these surgical procedures.

Plans for surgical procedures by assembling instrumentation, equipment, and necessary supplies.

Perinatal Tech Duties: Cooperative relationship with the surgical team, patient and family. Maintains a calm atmosphere that promotes productivity and effective communication.

Performs activities of daily living and personal care needs under the guidance and supervision of the Registered Nurse.

Demonstrates adherence to safe patient handling policy.

Maintains the patient care areas to ensure cleanliness, safety and supplies of material and equipment.

Performs technical skills relating to physical, mental health and social needs of patients under the guidance and supervision of the RN.

Documents the collection of basic patient data and care provided and reports observations related to the patients physical, social and mental status to the RN.

Demonstrates time management skills.

Receives delegated work adhering to the five rights of delegation.

Performs job specific requirements and other duties as assigned.

Serves as a preceptor for new employees.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
