The Commercial Loan Underwriter is responsible for underwriting large and complex commercial loans. He or she evaluates, analyzes and presents information relating to credit requests to commercial lending personnel. The Commercial Loan Underwriter identifies, analyzes, and evaluates loan risks and compensating factors, and ensures the safety of bank assets. He or she assists commercial loan officers with questions and submissions for approval. The Commercial Loan Underwriter assures that all loans underwritten and sent for approval are complete and meet the Bank's standards and procedures as well as regulatory underwriting guidelines as needed. He or she attends Senior Loan Committee Meetings and assists the commercial lender with the loan presentation, offers suggestions and answers questions. The Commercial Loan Underwriter meets with applicants to explain credit policies and to obtain loan information and documentation. He or she assists in collection activities as needed. The Commercial Loan Underwriter provides general bank information and cross-sales services.
Qualifications
Must be at least 18 years old
High school diploma or GED required
Least six years of experience in commercial lending with a knowledge of the commercial lending process and loan documentation including; financial statements, credit reports, tax returns, collateral, collections, loan structure, bank policies and procedures, lending regulatory requirements and underwriting requirements
Maintenance of an active license number with the Nationwide Mortgage Licensing System and Registry or the ability to obtain such
Must be proficient with using Microsoft office products with an emphasis on Word and Excel Familiarity with general loan documentation helpful
Accurate and attentive to detail

Able to use a computer, adding machine, copy machine, and basic business equipment
Able to get along well with coworkers

Responsibilities
Assumes responsibility for underwriting new and renewing commercial loans in accordance with various program requirements, bank standards, and related legal and regulatory requirements.
Analyzes and underwrites loan requests. Structures loans and provides recommendations to commercial lending personnel
Orders financial spreads and reviews information received from credit administration regarding the analysis of tax returns and the balance sheets of applicants
Evaluates the adequacy of the applicant's income and the probability that the customer will be able to meet expected financial obligations. Assesses family support requirements. Compares previous expenses with proposed expenses. Examines income trends and determines possibilities for increased income in future years
Analyzes financial statements and other supporting documents in order to evaluate a potential borrower's assets. Ensures that assets meet lending requirements, are derived from acceptable sources, and have acceptable levels of reserves
Reviews borrower's credit. Reviews the manner in which obligations have been met and financial affairs managed. Investigates derogatory credit. Ensures that all previous credit histories are rated, and all debts are appropriately listed and rated
Evaluates the assessment of collateral held to secure the loan. Determines the adequacy of the loan collateral. Orders and reviews appraisals and/or collateral evaluations and, when applicable, ensures that risks are appropriate and meet all guidelines of the loan type
Prepares loan memorandums and other related documents (loan modification, loan extensions, etc.) for the credit file and/or Senior Loan Committee as needed
Reviews related documentation including budgets, income, profit and loss statements and required reports
Identifies problems or potential problems with credit information and coordinates with the responsible loan officer to resolve the problems
Ensures that all documentation is contained in the loan file and that the loan file is complete when submitted for approval, final documentation or funding
Ensures that all loans granted or forwarded for approval meet underwriting and regulatory requirements, contain the necessary signatures and approval and ensure the safety of the bank's assets
Addresses industry and financial risks and offers suggestions for mitigation
Assumes responsibility for providing assistance to commercial lending personnel, borrowers and potential borrowers
Serves as a trusted advisor for commercial lending personnel throughout the loan submission process. Discusses loan alternatives, credit criteria, interest rates, and loan documentation with commercial loan officers in an attempt to strengthen the loan officer's understanding of commercial credit
Assists in review of construction loan advances on commercial properties
Collects necessary financial documents from customers to complete credit package
Assists with monitoring of loan covenants, pending loan items, delinquent and maturing loans
Keeps borrowers informed of bank loan policies and services. Educates customers regarding bank products and services requested and how they can better serve their individual financial needs
Communicates and responds to customers regarding new credit requests and existing loans. Meets with applicants and commercial lenders when loans are denied and assists with the explanation and offers suggestions for alternatives when needed
Engages in individual and joint business calls and development activities. Responsible for the solicitation and establishment of new customers for the Bank
Maintains and projects the Bank's professional reputation
Keeps management informed of area activities and any significant problems or concerns
Attends meetings as required
Serves as a representative for D.L. Evans Bank in the community
Promotes D.L. Evans Bank at all times
Completes special projects as assigned
