Position: Medical Surgical Unit Nurse Manager

Reports to: Nurse Director of Inpatient Services

Location: Large urban hospital in the East Bay

Job Summary: The Medical Surgical Unit Nurse Manager is responsible for overseeing the daily operations and management of the Medical Surgical Unit. This position requires strong leadership skills, clinical expertise, and a commitment to providing high-quality patient care. The Nurse Manager will work closely with a team of Assistant Nurse Managers to ensure 24/7 coverage and optimal patient outcomes. The role reports directly to the Nurse Director of Inpatient Services and is an integral part of the hospital\'s leadership team.

Responsibilities:

Leadership and Management:

  • Provide visionary leadership to the Medical Surgical Unit, promoting a culture of excellence, collaboration, and patient-centered care.
  • Foster a positive work environment that promotes staff engagement, professional growth, and teamwork.
  • Collaborate with the Assistant Nurse Managers to ensure 24/7 unit coverage, adequate staffing levels, and efficient patient flow.
  • Develop and implement unit-specific policies, procedures, and protocols in alignment with organizational standards and evidence-based practices.
  • Manage and allocate resources effectively, including personnel, equipment, and supplies.
  • Monitor and evaluate the performance of nursing staff, providing feedback, coaching, and mentorship as needed.
  • Foster effective interdisciplinary communication and collaboration among healthcare providers within the unit and across departments.
Clinical Oversight and Quality Improvement:
  • Ensure the delivery of safe, effective, and compassionate patient care by monitoring and maintaining high clinical standards.
  • Promote evidence-based practice and contribute to the development and implementation of quality improvement initiatives.
  • Monitor patient outcomes, identify trends, and implement strategies to enhance patient safety and satisfaction.
  • Collaborate with the Nurse Director of Inpatient Services to develop and monitor unit-specific quality indicators and performance metrics.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary committees and meetings to contribute to hospital-wide quality improvement initiatives.
Staff Development and Education:
  • Support the professional growth and development of nursing staff, identifying learning needs and providing educational resources and opportunities.
  • Promote a culture of continuous learning and assist staff in staying current with the latest evidence-based practices and clinical advancements.
  • Collaborate with the hospital\'s education department to facilitate orientation programs, ongoing education, and competency assessments.
  • Encourage and support staff members in pursuing advanced degrees and professional certifications.
Administrative Duties:
  • Manage the unit budget, ensuring effective utilization of resources and adherence to financial targets.
  • Participate in strategic planning and decision-making processes related to the Medical Surgical Unit.
  • Generate reports and maintain accurate documentation related to unit operations, quality metrics, and staff performance.
  • Collaborate with other departments and stakeholders to facilitate efficient patient care processes, interdisciplinary collaboration, and continuity of care.
Qualifications:
  • Registered Nurse (RN) with an active state license.
  • Bachelor\'s degree in nursing required; master\'s degree in nursing or related field preferred.
  • Minimum of five years of clinical experience in a medical surgical setting.
  • Previous experience in a leadership or management role preferred.
  • Strong clinical knowledge and understanding of medical surgical nursing principles and best practices.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and motivate a diverse team.
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements, quality improvement methodologies, and patient safety initiatives.
  • Proficient in using healthcare technology and electronic health record systems.
Salary and Benefits:
  • Competitive salary range: $181,000 to $234,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
