The Shelter Veterinarian provides comprehensive medical and surgical care to animals housed at MADACC, with a strong focus on population health, humane outcomes, public safety, and compliance with local and state regulations. The ideal candidate has a strong work ethic, is a respectful and collaborative team player, and brings a laid-back, solutions-oriented attitude to a high-volume, mission-driven environment.
This role requires proficiency in high-volume, high-quality (HVHQ) spay/neuter, confidence in performing various surgeries, and a commitment to practical, evidence-based shelter medicine.
Key Responsibilities:
Perform physical exams, diagnostics, and medical treatments for shelter animals.
Conduct HVHQ spay/neuter surgeries on a regular basis.
Perform various surgeries, including:
Cherry eye repair
Cystotomy
Limb amputations
Enucleations
Entropion repairs
Hernia repair (umbilical, inguinal)
Mass removals
Dental extractions
Develop and maintain shelter medical protocols, ensuring compliance with all relevant laws and veterinary standards.
Participate in disease prevention, outbreak response, and population management.
Maintain accurate, timely, and legally defensible medical records.
Collaborate with veterinary technicians, animal care staff, and animal control officers.
Provide medical support in cruelty investigations, rabies quarantines, and public health-related cases.
Support community engagement through wellness and vaccination clinics.
Qualifications:
Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM or VMD) from an accredited institution.
Licensed to practice veterinary medicine in the state of Wisconsin (or ability to obtain prior to start).
DEA license (or ability to obtain).
Minimum of 2 years of veterinary experience, preferably in shelter medicine, high-volume practice, or municipal veterinary work.
Skilled in HVHQ spay/neuter and various surgeries.
Strong knowledge of shelter medicine best practices, infectious disease control, and public health considerations.
A positive, flexible, and team-focused attitude.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
Bilingual (English/Spanish) is a plus, but not required.
