ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following
Establish veterinary protocols.
Maintain up-to-date knowledge of shelter animal health protocols, surgical procedures, and companion animal health issues.
Perform spay/neuter surgeries (including pediatric, crypt-orchids and pregnant animals) for shelter animals and the low cost spay/neuter clinic; larger surgical procedures as needed on shelter animals.
Examine animals, evaluate animal health and perform veterinary medical and surgical procedures, prescribing and administering medications, anti-parasite treatments, tests, and lab work.
Treat animals medically with humane compassion that may become ill, sick or injured.
Respond to emergencies arising from medical or surgical intervention.
Provide emergency and non-emergency medical treatment of shelter animals and foster animals; assist in identifying animals in need of medical or surgical intervention.
Provide direction to staff responsible for following prescribed treatment and maintaining treatment records for animals brought to the shelter; ensure that the highest level of care is provided and that changes in animal's conditions are recorded.
Provide supervision and training of other staff veterinarians and veterinary technicians and other staff members.
Work closely with the executive director in regard to clinic management and staff to ensure efficient operation.
Maintain relationship/communication with other practicing veterinarians in surrounding areas.
Assist with vaccination clinics or other clinics as needed.
Lead and develop initiatives in improving medical protocols and treating disease processes.
Ensure that all state and federal laws, state regulations, accepted standards, the practice of veterinary medicine, drug control, and animal care and handling are adhered to.
Research issues and prepare memos and other documents as requested by the Executive Director and others.
Work with the Executive Director to maintain a work schedule for other veterinarians working at the Hornell Area Humane Society.
Other duties assigned as needed.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Act in a supervisory capacity to other staff veterinarians and veterinary technicians.
Responsible for hiring, supervising and giving yearly reviews to the shelter veterinarians and veterinary technicians.

Attendance and Dependability: The Lead Shelter Veterinarian can be depended on to report to work at the scheduled time, is seldom absent from work, and can be depended upon to stay until completing the daily responsibilities of the position.
Relationships with others: The Staff Veterinarian works effectively and relates well with others including superiors, colleagues, and individuals inside and outside of the Hornell Area Humane Society and exhibits a professional manner in dealing with others and works to maintain constructive working relationships.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Fifth year college or university program from an accredited veterinary medicine university; and two to four years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before employees or volunteers of the organization.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using common whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

New York State veterinary license and veterinary certificate
