New Product Development Engineering Intern (Summer 2023)

This internship is a unique opportunity to gain both Design Engineering and hands-on Test Engineering experience in a combination of laboratory

workshop

& office environments. This role will report to & be mentored by a Senior New Product Development Engineer within Worthington Industries\' Building Products Innovation Team. Worthington Industries is developing an industry-disrupting new product line in its largest new product development project to date. RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Perform hands-on mechanical experiments in a laboratory environment (drop testing

etc)

• Operate hand-tools safely to build prototypes

custom test fixtures

& test specimens in a workshop environment

• Plan & develop new test methods or procedures with safety in mind
• Collect test data

analyze test results

create written test reports

• Coordinate product testing with external testing firms or laboratories when a specific test requires outside help
• Participate in new product design reviews and brainstorming sessions
• Design test fixtures

specimens

or prototypes using SolidWorks 2022 (2D drawings

3D parts

& 3D assemblies)

• Reverse engineer competitive products

patents

and technology

• Perform reviews of scientific or industry literature
• Research and report back on developments in strategic technology areas

manufacturing techniques

and potential vendors

• Participate in consumer insight activities with customers

end users

or industry experts

REQUIREMENTS:

• Current junior or senior working towards a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or B.S. in Manufacturing Engineering (or related field)
• Must be able to lift 50lbs
• Must have reliable transportation; Mid-workday travel between laboratory location & corporate office location is required (3 miles)

once daily maximum.

• Mechanical inclination and interest in hands-on problem solving

prototyping

and testing

• Prior experience safely using hand tools required
• Minimum of 3.0 GPA
• Able to communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical audiences
• Capable of handling multiple assignments at once
• Able and interested in independent problem solving with moderate direction
• 2D & 3D CAD software experience (SolidWorks preferred)
• Prior engineering intern/coop experience preferred
