The Materials Engineer will actively work within a team effort in all technology services, material analysis, material development, product development, and engineering technology. The Materials Engineer will provide technical guidance in the development, quality, and testing of wear resistant and low friction materials for tribological applications in mechanical seals. They will also consult material compatibility with regards to alloys, superalloys, elastomers, polymers, carbons, ceramics, hard coatings and any other materials of construction. Forensics on suspected material issues, fracture analysis and failure modes of the mentioned materials. Review and analysis of new materials including in-house production, additive manufacturing and external supplier qualification. The role requires a basic understanding of international mechanical test standards and regulatory compliance. This engineering position will be responsible for producing and maintaining internal specifications for materials and will insure that all materials meet quality standards as required by the company\'s internal and external customers

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Responsible to lead rapid product development and to maintain an entrepreneurial culture which supports the aggressive economic and business goals of the company. \xe2\x80\xa2 Define development standards and methodologies. \xe2\x80\xa2 Utilize ingenuity and inventive thinking to reduce cost, increase performance, maximize profits, and optimize customer satisfaction for the products being sold into the market place. \xe2\x80\xa2 Provide technical support in the materials arena to internal and external customers, which may involve travel. \xe2\x80\xa2 Develop and maintain sophisticated technical and analytical characterization technologies. \xe2\x80\xa2 Any and all activities required to promote the company and maximize profitability as suggested by the new product development group. \xe2\x80\xa2 Forensics analysis on failed components from all John Crane divisions.
The Individual

Minimum of BS in Material Science with 3+ years experience in the field of material science or physics with experience in the fields of tribology, material development for tribological applications, corrosion, failure analysis, fractography, and surface characterization technologies including electron microscopy and profilometry. \xe2\x80\xa2 Experience working with a scanning electron microscope, polarizing microscopes (strongly preferred), FTIR, Tensile and compression testing and other analytical equipment. \xe2\x80\xa2 Practical experience with metallography sample preparation. \xe2\x80\xa2 Experience in reviewing materials for use in mechanical seal and bearing product applications. \xe2\x80\xa2 Experience in development and analytical characterization of wear resistant ceramic materials including silicon carbide, silicon nitride, tungsten carbide, and diamond composites. \xe2\x80\xa2 Experience in hard coating technologies and analysis of various hard coatings. \xe2\x80\xa2 Versed in the use and application of ASTM, SAE, ISO and other pertaining specifications. \xe2\x80\xa2 Familiar with regulatory compliance with regards to REACH, RoHS, WRAS, NSF-61 and FDA with a willingness to learn as they come up. \xe2\x80\xa2 Ability to multitask and respond promptly to field questions. \xe2\x80\xa2 Desire to look at new materials and technologies that may offer a benefit to our products.
