The Managing Editor manages the day-to-day operations of New Ohio Review\xe2\x80\x94including communication, payments, submission organization, website maintenance, and layout of the magazine. This person must be conversant with many computer programs, including Dreamweaver and InDesign among others, and have experience generating and maintaining publications, with a background in publishing and editing.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Arranging for payment contributors, creating their contracts, managing short-form agreements, W-9s, and supplier payee information forms, and working in the Concur system to create invoices. Each of these payments requires multiple steps: mailing, email outreach, and careful management.
  • The managing editor will also be responsible for reading some submissions\xe2\x80\x94mostly in nonfiction and fiction. This literary work may involve writing extensive comments on the pieces, communicating with the writers, and forwarding promising work to the editor.
  • Fundraising and grant outreach. The new managing editor will renew efforts to access grants from the Ohio Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts, among other funding sources.
  • Managing the day-to-day tasks of the journal, to include the following:
    • Editing and layout of the print version of New Ohio Review, which includes entering contents of the issue into InDesign, paginating, and proofreading the material for each issue, as well as preparing and sending out proofs and incorporating author responses and changes into the final copy. Layout design includes designing the cover and working with relevant artists. Along with the layout of the issue, the managing editor also orchestrates distribution of the journal nationwide, as well as to subscribers.
    • Web design and maintenance for the NOR website including announcements on the site as well as the journal\xe2\x80\x99s Facebook and Twitter page. Maintenance and design includes an entire reworking of color and content for each issue as well as managing our online content, our NOR audio stories and poems, and dozens of individual pages.
    • Supervise, with the editor, the assistant editor (a graduate student) and the editorial interns (undergraduates).
    • Manage Spreadsheets and online databases of submitters and subscribers. Filing of author information.
    • Track sales and submissions in our online system, submittable. Track payments from submittable. Document print submissions and entries to our annual writing contest.
    • Promote the journal through ad design and email communications.
    • Organize participation in the Associated Writing Programs conferences. Shipping journals to the venue. Arranging workers for the table and developing outreach materials. Working to staff the book fair table, attend conference presentations, and network with other editors. Assist in tracking submissions, sales, and subscription. This includes recording and depositing cash, credit, and check incomes. Manage the journal\xe2\x80\x99s email accounts and respond in a timely manner. Answer daily queries about status of individual submissions. Work with accepted writers on their pieces, collecting biographies. Act as a public face/voice of NOR.




Minimum Qualifications
  • MFA in Creative Writing or MA in English. with a specialization in Creative Writing, or related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years related work experience.




Preferred Qualifications
  • Five years\xe2\x80\x99 experience as Managing Editor of a literary journal.
