The RAND Corporation has an exciting opportunity for an experienced publishing professional to use their expertise to contribute to RAND\xe2\x80\x99s mission to help improve policy and decisionmaking through research and analysis. Quality research communications products are core to RAND\xe2\x80\x99s mission, and this position will help lead the team responsible for the editorial work on hundreds of research communications products that RAND produces each year.

This position\xe2\x80\x94part of the Research Editorial team within the Office of External Affairs\xe2\x80\x99 Research Editorial and Production group\xe2\x80\x94reports to the Managing Editor, Research Editorial. The Manager, Editorial Services, will collaborate on the design and execution of strategies to monitor and strengthen editorial department performance and workflow. Among the position\xe2\x80\x99s primary duties is to directly manage a subgroup of editorial staff, which includes supervising their performance; coaching, mentoring, and training those staff; and hiring and onboarding new team members. In addition, the successful candidate will assist the Managing Editor in assessing editorial, typesetting, proofreading, and microcontent quality; coordinating editorial assignments; performing intake assessments of manuscript submissions; and acting as the backup to the Managing Editor as needed. The Manager, Editorial Services, also independently executes editorial work on challenging, high-priority, or sensitive publications and fulfills other duties as directed.

Successful candidates must demonstrate a strong interest in leading and managing staff, an aptitude for copyediting and proofreading, and excellent organizational and time-management skills, including the ability to work at a brisk pace and meet vigorous, concurrent deadlines across multiple projects.

Qualifications

Required

  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills across communication platforms (e.g., email, chat, phone)
  • Demonstrated superior skills in copyediting, proofreading, and typesetting, including a proven ability to edit, proofread, and typeset long- and short-form research publications according to house style
  • Proven ability to independently manage and troubleshoot multiple priorities and projects in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment
  • Thorough knowledge of Microsoft Word (including templates and paragraph styles), as well as facility with Excel and PowerPoint
  • Thorough knowledge of Adobe Acrobat and InDesign
  • Superior organizational, time-management, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skills
  • A minimum of 1 year of experience in a supervisory or project leadership role
Preferred
  • Familiarity with production-management (e.g., Workfront) and content-management (e.g., Adobe Experience Manager) systems and software
  • Familiarity with commonly used style guides (e.g., The Chicago Manual of Style) and scholarly citation formats (e.g., APA)
  • Facility with Mac and Windows operating systems
  • Experience with formal editing in an academic, public policy, or nonprofit setting
  • Interest in and familiarity with U.S. and international public policy
Education Requirements

A bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree is required. A master\xe2\x80\x99s degree and a degree in English, communications, or a related discipline are preferred.

Experience

A minimum of 6 years of experience in a publishing, communications, or similar environment is required.

Security Clearance

The ability to obtain and maintain DHS Fitness and a U.S. security clearance is required. U.S. citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance.

Location

This position will be located at one of the following RAND offices: Arlington, Va.; Pittsburgh, Pa.; or Santa Monica, Calif. This position is eligible for RAND\xe2\x80\x99s hybrid work environment, which enables a blend of on-site and remote work. Some on-site presence will be required to meet business needs, including on an ad-hoc basis; on-site needs will vary from month to month.

Special Note

As part of the recruiting process, candidates are required to submit two work samples (at least 20 pages each) that demonstrate their editing skills.

Salary Range

$95,000 \xe2\x80\x93 $144,800
