Job Purpose:
Under limited supervision of the Captain/Unit Manager, plans and directs Correctional Officers in the living unit, assists in planning and implementing operational procedures and ensures that youth in the living unit are provided program discipline, safety and security. To set forth responsibilities for all shift supervisors; to ensure shift supervisors are knowledgeable of all security-related job assignments and the requirements to effectively supervise assigned security personnel; to ensure that the highest level of security, safety, compliance with Performance based Standards, and sanitation in practiced in the living room.

Job Duties:
Supervises, manages, leads, train and mentors all Correctional Officers assigned to the unit in a secure environment in the performance of duties to ensure the safety and security of all staff, youth and state property. Monitors unit to ensure compliance with safety, security, sanitation and maintenance regulations.

Ensures that proper staff coverage is maintained at all times. Respond to and handle situations of concern by maintaining the master schedule. Supervises/attends daily shift briefings periodically to ensure proper communication/teamwork for all staff on shifts at a specific facility.

Maintains inventory of all security equipment to include but not limited to keys, vehicles, security devices, etc. Provides subordinate staff with policy and procedure interpretations.

Submits written reports to the Captain of Security pertaining to youth or employee-related incidents and any matters pertaining to the security and safety of the institution. Ensure all reports are accurate and submitted to the appropriate person at the end of the shift.

Attends team members meetings to discuss youth issues, treatment, and security and participates with employee recognition selection committees when directed by the Captain of Security.

Ensure annual EPMS planning stages and reviews of supervised staff are prepared and submitted to the Office of Human Resources (OHR) in accordance with OHR standards.

Performs other related duties.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

Agency Requirements:
High school diploma or equivalent and 3 years of experience in correctional, security, military, or police work, including at least 1 year of supervisory experience required.

Special Requirements:
Must be an officer in compliance with and certified under CLEE (Continuing Law Enforcement Education) within six (6) months of employment. Must have a 80% rate on competency/proficiency exam and possess supervisor and teaching skills.

Additional Requirements:
Must attend, pass and maintain all required DJJ training courses. Must pass a drug test.
Considerable knowledge of state law, secured facility rules, regulation as well as requirements for the control of youth and in compliance with SC Child Abuse Statutes.

Considerable knowledge of purposed, methods, and operational practices of DJJ facilities. Lead and develop new officers.

Ability to complete required reports to include daily ERS Reports. Ability to establish working relationships with employees.

Prone positions (flat on stomach and/or back). kicks and strike motions, joint manipulations, bending at the waist and torque motions, lift hands above the head lifting 50+pound, repeated breathing(inhaling/exhaling techniques for CPR/First Aid/AED, kneel on knees (together and individually) unsupported.

Work in extreme heat/cold/humidity/inclement weather; safely operate a motor vehicle to include a valid state issued driver\'s license, walk and/or stand extended periods of time, visually distinguish subjects of up to 75 yards, physically respond appropriately to emergency situations. Attends training and maintains certification required by CLEE (Continuing Law Enforcement Education).

Under limited supervision annually scheduled performance review. Works independently on a limited basis.

As the organization continues to adjust to new leadership and organizational structure, the tasks and duties associated with this position maybe changed.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred:
A bachelor\'s degree in a human services or criminal justice field may substitute for the required supervisory experience.

Essential:
The position is not sedentary; employees must be mobile and able to bend and lift, interact and intervene with youth.

This position performs job duties relating to the custody, control, transportation or recapture of youth within the jurisdiction of the Department of Juvenile Justice and the employee may have direct and indirect contact with youth within the jurisdiction of the Department of Juvenile Justice.

Training applicable to these duties will be provided.
