POSITION SUMMARY
The Library Aide performs crucial customer service duties within the Bozeman Public Library. This role primarily works directly with library patrons both in person and by phone as well as maintains the library\xe2\x80\x99s collection through sorting and shelving books. It requires a high level of friendly and consistent customer service and some technology skills. Must be flexible, comfortable with a continuously changing environment, and enjoy constant patron interaction. A successful candidate is welcoming to patrons of all ages and backgrounds and approaches the job with humor and an open mind. Bozeman Public Library\xe2\x80\x99s staff have a strong sense of community, a passion for curiosity and risk-taking, and a positive approach to trying new ideas.

This position will primarily work at the information desk answering questions about the library, helping people locate materials and resources, and registering new patrons for library cards. This position will also sort and shelve books, magazines, audio/video items, and other library materials in accordance with the Dewey Decimal System, including straightening and shifting books as needed. A portion of each scheduled shift will include working at the information desk, sorting recently returned books, and shelving items throughout the library.
MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • High School Diploma or GED; and
  • Some (1 year) previous customer service and/or library experience; or
  • Any combination of experience and training which provides the equivalent scope of knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Substantial knowledge of library functions, rules, policies, and procedures;
  • Substantial knowledge of the Dewey Decimal System;
  • Substantial knowledge of specific Department materials and resources;
  • Substantial knowledge of print and electronic resources;
  • Ability to use library equipment employed in all phases or functions of assigned duties, including basic computer operation, microform readers, photocopy machine, typewriter, projectors, cash register, multi-line phone system;
  • Ability to troubleshoot minor computer problems and other equipment malfunctions;
  • Substantial knowledge of basic math principles;
  • Ability to type 35-40 words per minute;
  • Ability to work independently and provide assistance to patrons;
  • Ability to sort and file according to the Dewey Decimal System;
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others, both orally and in writing, using both technical and non-technical language;
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and/or written policies, procedures, and instructions;
  • Ability to prepare and present accurate and reliable reports containing findings and recommendations;
  • Ability to operate or quickly learn to operate a personal computer using standard or customized software applications appropriate to assigned tasks;
  • Ability to use logical and creative thought processes to develop solutions according to written specifications and/or oral instructions;
  • Ability to perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with accuracy and speed under the pressure of time-sensitive deadlines;
  • Ability and willingness to quickly learn and put to use new skills and knowledge brought about by rapidly changing information and/or technology;
  • Ingenuity, and inventiveness in the performance of assigned tasks;
  • Consistently performs assignments in accordance with the City\'s Core Values of Integrity, Leadership, Service and Teamwork.
