Additionally help establish a level playing field for honest contractors by fighting fraud and abuse in support of eliminating the State\'s underground economy.

These positions will be considered In-Training for 24 months. Within this period, you will learn and apply L&I rules, policies, state laws, and best practices in relation to electrical inspections. By the end of your In-Training period you will be a full-fledged L&I Electrical Inspector with the ability to:

  • Inspect electrical installations in various stages of construction.
  • Enforce compliance with electrical licensing laws, state rules and the National Electrical Code.
  • Issue citations or correction notices for safety violations.
  • Additionally, you will enjoy effectively maintaining a busy daily schedule and using a computer to maintain and update records according to policies and procedures.
The applicant hired for this opportunity will have the salary set at Step M, $87,144/annually.

Duties

Some of what you will do:
  • Check individuals and companies performing electrical installations for compliance with licensing, certification, and permitting requirements. Issue citations for non-compliance.
  • Conduct field investigations and compile investigation reports.
  • Issue approval notices for electrical installations and write correction notices when there are code violations.
  • Issue electrical fee due notices when required by appropriate WAC rules.
  • Disconnect unsafe wiring or equipment according to policy and procedures.
  • Answer questions about NEC, and Washington State wiring rules and regulations.
  • Maintain good relations with contractors, architects, engineers, electric utilities and private parties engaged in the use and installation of electrical equipment.
  • When required, prepare testimony and testify on behalf of the Department before an Administrative Law Judge, the Electrical Board, and other courts regarding investigations and findings, and to defend and support citations issued.
Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

Possess a valid and unexpired WA State General Journeyman (EL01) electrician certificate or Master General Journeyman (ME01) electrician certificate. Employees who reach an inactive status, due to failure to participate in Department provided CEU courses will be required to obtain necessary CEU\'s within 90 days after reaching inactive status at their own cost.

Employees driving a privately owned vehicle (POV) on state business must have liability insurance on the POV.

As well as:
  • Four years of experience as a certified journeyman electrician (EL01) to include commercial and industrial installations.
AND
  • 80% of electrical employment history was employed by a Licensed (EL01) Electrical Contractor, engaged in the electrical construction industry.
OR
  • Two years of college-level training in electrical engineering and four years of continuous practical electrical installation experience and a General Administrators certification (AD01).
OR
  • Four years of college-level training in electrical engineering and two years of continuous practical electrical installation experience and the General Administrators certification (AD01).
Desired Qualifications:
  • Washington State General Administrator Certificate (AD01)
  • Ability to mediate and communicate in a positive manner during a confrontational situation; possess outstanding conflict resolution skills
  • Commitment to public safety and enforcement of electrical licensing, certification and permitting requirements.
  • Demonstrated experience in a cross-section of electrical work in the electrical construction industry.
  • Experience reading and interpreting plans and blueprints of electrical installations.
  • Strong written and in person communication skills.
  • Ability to explain electrical trade rules, regulations, policies and procedures. Remain current and trained in applicable electrical codes, laws and theory.
  • Ability to crawl under buildings and into attics, climb ladders and scaffolding, enter confined spaces following approved safety policies, and follow proper procedures to perform electrical inspections.
  • Walk long distances to access assigned inspections.
  • Computer skills are necessary. Able to navigate the Internet source information, use email, and willing/able to learn computer programs and software.
  • Treat contractors with respect and dignity while enforcing Washington State laws.
  • Proven ability to manage confidential business matters, internal communications and files. A self-starter able to work independently, determining actions needed with minimal or no guidance.
  • Critical thinker with demonstrated observation skills, and an acute attention to detail. Ability to review and analyze information for use in preparation of correspondence, reports and other assigned tasks.
  • Able to easily take direction and give/receive constructive feedback.

For this position, telework is upon business needs and supervisor approval. The assigned duty station for this position can be either Silverdale or Sequim, Washington.
