Job Description


The Alaka`ina Foundation Family of Companies (FOCs) is looking for a\xc2\xa0Laboratory Research Associate 3\xc2\xa0to support our government client located at Aberdeen Proving Grounds, Maryland. DESCRIPTION OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conduct animal movement, transportation, feeding, behavioral training, surgical support, veterinary technical support, and bio-sampling.
  • Maintain laboratory equipment/supplies and appropriate inventories/hand receipts.
  • Ensure quality of procedures and data integrity,
  • Ensure compliance with all regulatory agencies.
  • Assist with scheduling and executing experimental protocols.
  • Weigh animals and make observations, based on approved IACUC protocol.
  • Maintain records, compile data, and requests to meet the government\'s needs.
  • Receive and prepare animals for study.
  • Examine animals for any physical or health abnormalities.
  • Conduct routine feeding and housing of animals.
  • Maintain animals in proper caging and environment.
  • Monitor health and status of animals during the course of the study.
  • Perform literature searched as required to provide necessary background information and utilizes reference management software.
  • Maintain laboratory notebook according to laboratory, DA and/or DOD standards.
  • Prepare and dilute chemical agents, administer agents, decontaminate, dispose and properly turn-in agent waster.
  • Utilize autoshaping, timing schedules, simple and complex schedule of reinforcement and discrimination and reaction-time behavioral cognitive tasks to prepare for behavioral evaluation.
  • Implement an enrichment plan consistent with institutional standards and in support of protocol needs.
  • Assess social environment and hierarchy to maximize beneficial social partnership/pairing of animals.
  • Conduct NHP training program to assess behavioral competence and compliance.
  • Record and interpret large animal telemetry and physiology data.
  • Perform necropsy and harvest tissue.
REQUIRED DEGREE/EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION: Bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree in biological sciences or similar field. REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
  • 2+ years experience.
  • At least 1 year of NHP handling experience.
  • Familiarity with preparation of chemical solutions (i.e. - calculating, drawing up, mixing agents, medications and/or vaccines by weight).
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to adapt to new research team/project assignment.
DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Experience using MED PC, Visual Basic, SPSS, Prism, and/or other statistical or behavioral software.
  • Ability to use DSI software and/or similar telemetry software.
  • Experience conducting operant behavioral training/testing in multiple species.
  • Knowledge of pharmacology and neuroscience as applied to medical chemical defense research.
REQUIRED CITIZENSHIP AND CLEARANCE:
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Must be able to obtain a DoD Secret clearance.
