Position Details: Full Time Evening Shift - Processing 2:30PM - 11PM Description:

Performs phlebotomy, processes patient specimens and performs patient registration. Utilizes Laboratory computer system. Prepares specimens to be sent to reference laboratories. Maintains department inventory and operates and maintains equipment. Performs various clerical duties. Adheres to patient identification, laboratory safety, and department policies and procedures. Performs duties and responsibilities in a manner consistent with our mission and values.

Principle Accountabilities: % Of Time Spent

1. Safety/Risk Management: Maintains an environment for employees, patients, medical staff, and visitors that promote safety consciousness in order to achieve a safe physical environment. Complies with Infection Control guidelines. Adheres to chemical hygiene policies. Follows confidentiality policy/procedure. Adheres to hospital wide and department specific safety regulations. Writes QI reports as necessary. Creates a safe and clean work environment. Utilizes the appropriate safety engineering devices. (10%)

2. Coordination of Services: coordinates activities, which allow quality work within a timely manner. Functions efficiently and effectively in pertinent areas during routine operations and computer \'downtimes.\' Participate in training new employees and other trainees to include phlebotomy techniques and HIS registration. Stocks area, monitors expiration dates, and alerts appropriate personnel when supplies are low. Receives, labels and stores supplies accurately and in a timely manner. Fill orders from customers for lab supplies. (10%)

3. Primary Aspects of the Job: exhibits organizational skills and a conscientiousness which allows for precise and accurate results in a timely manner. Performs various types of HIS registration on patients and /or specimens. Demonstrates proper time management skills, priority setting, and multi-tasking abilities. Collects and/or assists with collection of patient specimens (to include blood, urine, Autologous blood, etc) in a timely manner, following approved procedure with technical expertise. Utilizes positive patient identification. Assures positive patient identification. Adheres to procedures for special and age related requirements. Evaluates specimen acceptability. Verifies tests requested to tests ordered and obtained. Labels specimens correctly and completely. Verifies work in a timely manner. Processes specimens received accurately and promptly. Computer entry. Confirm interpretation of physician orders. Confirm orders with specimen. Screen samples for acceptability. Takes appropriate action for unsuitable, unacceptable, mislabeled specimens. Directs specimens to proper departments and individuals in a timely manner. Appropriately prepares specimens for transportation to other clinical laboratories for testing. Maintains accurate records. Performs limited waived tests and procedures on biological and environmental materials using automated equipment or manual methods following established laboratory and testing procedures. (These tests include bleeding times, finger stick glucose, microbiology set-ups and others as authorized.) Performs work accurately and cost effectively. Evaluates specimen acceptability. Verifies work in a timely manner. Prepares and maintains reagents and solutions. Performs quality control and equipment maintenance. Maintains proper quality control records. Documents corrective action for unacceptable results. Performs preventive maintenance on equipment. Performs work accurately and cost effectively. Creates and uses work aid documents correctly and routinely in a timely manner (pending, batch, error, etc). Performs various clerical duties to include but not limited to: Sending out reports; Typing as necessary; Faxing reports; and Filing. Demonstrates professional and customer focused behaviors. Other duties as assigned. (50%)

4. Communication Management: maintains good quality relations between management, staff, patients, physicians and other departments to promote a good working environment. Handles inquiries regarding procedures and test results. Answer telephone in a friendly manner to include: Routing calls to proper location; Taking messages when needed; Answering questions; Making appointments; Giving verbal results; Give accurate instructions (by phone or in person) to patients or physician office personnel regarding proper specimen collection and patient preparation. Documents verbal orders according to procedure. Communicates test results appropriately, accurately and in a timely manner and documents communication as required. Remains current with departmental meeting minutes and other required reading. Performs various computer duties to include: Report generation and distribution; Maintenance of printers; Generation of computer error reports; Generation of computer credits. Reviews appropriate technical and/or operational procedures annually. (20%)

5. Technology: Maintains equipment in order to provide a continuous level of quality in test results. Performs laboratory and hospital computer functions with accuracy and promptness (i.e. receipt and verification, order entry, inquiries, labels, etc). Remains knowledgeable of downtime policies and procedures. Monitors, interprets and resolves error log. Performs hospital computer functions with accuracy and promptness (i.e. patient registration, charges, credits, etc). Remains knowledgeable of downtime policies and procedures. Maintains a working knowledge of personal computer, if applicable. Performs routine maintenance on centrifuges. Troubleshoots computer functions and equipment problems. Reports instrument malfunctions and performs minor repairs. Calls service representative or technical hot line as necessary. Attends in-service training on new equipment and procedures (i.e., WinNet). Remains current in Laboratory developments though participation in continuing education and self-study (5 hours per year). Performs other work duties as assigned. (10%)

Education:
High school diploma or GED required

Experience:
Customer Service, laboratory and phlebotomy experience preferred.
