The Opportunity:
We need your motivation and engagement to join our team as a Juvenile Rehabilitation Counselor 1 (formerly Juvenile Rehabilitation Counselor Assistant) at Sunrise Community Facility, a Juvenile Rehabilitation (JR) Minimum Security residential program that serves adjudicated youth. This position supports juvenile counseling services, working toward the common goal of disrupting the school to prison pipeline. You will assist our counselors to provide comprehensive case management, transition and reentry planning, counseling, and treatment services. You will supervise an assigned caseload of youth for compliance with program and treatment plan requirements, and prepare youth and their families for re-entry back into the community. A Bachelor\'s degree and one year of experience in this job class, or a combination of education/experience that totals at least six years, will prepare you for promotion into Juvenile Rehabilitation Counselor 2 jobs.

Some of what you will do:

  • Provide supervision and cognitive behavioral treatment to a limited caseload of youth that have a complex range of disorders and service needs.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of treatment and Reentry plans.
  • Provide individual and group counseling; assist in facilitating groups.
  • Identify and prioritize treatment needs and formulate appropriate treatment plans.
  • Assist youth in job searches and attending school, vocational, employment and community service.
  • Supervise youth in the facility and the community ensuring treatment plan and program expectations are met.
  • Perform routine security duties including perimeter, grounds and building security checks, room searches.
  • Supervise and assign chores within the facility to meet health and hygiene standards.
  • Monitor the movement of residents to and from school, medical, work, and recreational activities. Transport youth to community appointments.
What we are looking for:

Possible Combinations Education Experience
Combination 1 Bachelor\'s Degree None
Combination 2 Two years of college education or an Associate\'s Degree Two years of experience in casework, counseling, probation and parole, social services, planning, directing, or facilitating youth group activities, or related experience.
Combination 3 Two years of college education or an Associate\'s Degree Two years of experience as a Juvenile Rehabilitation Security Officer 1 (JRSO 1) or Juvenile Rehabilitation Officer 1 (JRO1)
Combination 4 H.S Diploma or GED Four years of experience in casework, counseling, probation and parole, social services, planning, directing, or facilitating youth group activities, or related experience.
Degree must be obtained from an accredited college or university whose accreditation is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA), or foreign equivalent verified by a NACES-approved organization at naces.org.

Foreign Equivalency certification must be attached to the application for degrees obtained outside the U.S. Incomplete applications may be screened out of the recruitment process.

In addition to those required qualifications, our ideal applicant will also have some or all of the following:
  • Effectively communicating verbally and in writing with management, coworkers, clients and community stakeholders as required to support successful transition/reentry of youth back to their families and communities.
  • Providing direct care to youth in a community environment.
  • Monitoring and managing youth in a non-secure residential setting in the community.
  • Developing and maintaining stakeholder relationships in the community that support successful transition/reentry of youth.
  • Understanding of adolescent development and juvenile rehabilitation practices and principles; experience providing cognitive/behavioral therapeutic interventions.
  • Competency in relating to clients from diverse backgrounds and cultural groups.
  • Knowledge of group behavior and dynamics, societal trends and influences related to juvenile delinquency.
  • Ability to use de-escalation techniques approved for intervention by JR with verbally and/or physically aggressive youth.
