Cambridge, MA, United States

Job Description

Director, Instructional Design (Assessment) Who We Are NewGlobe supports visionary governments to transform public education systems, the cornerstone of a prosperous, equitable, and peaceful society. With a comprehensive system transformation platform and data-driven educational services, NewGlobe delivers rapid and dramatic improvements in learning outcomes at state and nationwide scale. Through building impactful partnerships and programmes, NewGlobe ensures that all children have access to an education that will develop their full potential and create a foundation for growth and prosperity. NewGlobe leverages more than a decade of educational experience and proven impact in integrated school management, teacher professional development, instructional design innovation, technological system support, child-centered classroom practice, and parent engagement - all grounded in learning science - to ensure each teacher is empowered to engage children in transformational learning, and all children have the opportunity to develop to their full potential. Every day, NewGlobe supports governments to solve what were once seen as intractable problems, and by doing so, ensures this generation will be able to grow up to lead more fulfilled lives, while simultaneously building economic prosperity for themselves, their communities, and the globe. NewGlobe\xe2\x80\x99s high-touch, intensive professional development programs, along with integrated school management, teacher support, and assessment software, enable schools to succeed. NewGlobe works within state and national curriculum and syllabi, ensuring all children are empowered to learn their own history, and master local content, while being globally competitive in mathematics and languages. The science of behavior change and the science of learning is at the foundation of all programming. NewGlobe works with urgency because youth quickly becomes adulthood, and relentlessly because improvement requires continuous problem-solving. NewGlobe is honored to serve and to help rebuild trust in public systems. NewGlobe\xe2\x80\x99s work is all encompassing and will challenge you to use your full mind and heart each day. We need bright minds who want to be part of building a new globe - a more equitable globe - to join us. Academics Group The objective of the Academics group is to drive student achievement. To do so, we must know what is happening minute-by-minute for the typical child. The student\xe2\x80\x99s daily experience, and thus the path to achievement, emerges from their relationship with the teachers and the content that is delivered in the classroom. Our team is collaboratively organized around these levers. We develop rigorous content pitched at the right level for students to be delivered by a teacher who is prepared to succeed in the classroom. Our Instructional Design department builds the content; our Leadership & Development department trains teachers and school leaders using scientifically-proven techniques; our Learning Innovation department looks at cutting-edge research to generate breakthrough learning gains. Underpinning all of this is the work of the independent Measurement and Evaluation group, which provides Academics with an empirical orientation toward improving that daily experience and, in turn, driving achievement. Instructional Design The Instructional Design department produces the learning materials that are used in our schools across our communities. This department has team members based in multiple support offices, organized into teams that each work on a portfolio of projects. Driving student achievement through the development of rigorous content is the number one priority. One core tenet of the approach is less lecture (traditional among many schools in our markets) and more student practice. Consistent, rigorous opportunities to refine his or her skills are crucial to a child\xe2\x80\x99s learning progression. The Instructional Design department structures all lessons, textbooks, and other materials to ensure this. About the Role You will lead Instructional Design efforts focused on assessment design, development, maintenance, and monitoring. Across all NewGlobe programmes, pupil performance is constantly assessed through formative and summative assessments. Sometimes, these come in the form of termly exams targeting subject-level competencies. Other times, these come in the form of foundational literacy or numeracy assessments. Sometimes, these are printed, class-based tests. Other times, they are oral 1-1 assessments. In all cases, the data gathered by these assessments guide the development of our instructional program and impact the education of hundreds of thousands of children. You will oversee the quality and coherence of our entire assessment portfolio. You should be deeply familiar with core principles of assessment quality, including fairness, reliability, content validity, and consequential relevance. You should also understand the pathways to achieve these objectives, including careful content outlines, visual design, content review cycles, and evidence-based design methodologies. You will have several core priorities. First and foremost, you will be a thought leader. This will involve protected time for design thinking and creating unique, high-profile assessments. For example, this might include creating and piloting a world-leading foundational numeracy assessment. This will also involve protected time to analyze achievement data. All of this will take place under the guidance of the department leader, and will contribute to the department\xe2\x80\x99s ability to execute on its broader vision for quality and achievement. Second, you will oversee high-priority projects. This might include aligning our exam portfolio to be compatible with a new marking app or creating assessments for a new, high-visibility course within a government partnership. Or this might involve the ground-up design of a series of mock exams for a test prep program supporting pupils at the end of secondary school. As part of this core priority, you will manage a team to deliver on high-priority initiatives that require your ongoing involvement and expertise. You will support your team of Associates to create the necessary materials in a way that is aligned with your overall vision for assessment creation. Third, you will provide leadership and guidance to other Instructional Design teams who engage with assessment design and creation. You might provide coaching to a team writing a new batch of Grade 1 exams in Kenya, or provide written feedback on an existing set of exams being used in Nigeria. The goal is to ensure that all assessments meet quality specifications, and also that assessments across the department are aligned to specific standards for quality and internal coherence. Who You Are You are a skilled, thoughtful educator with years of school classroom and assessment design experience. You understand that great teaching is key to delivering learning gains. But you also have a track record of designing high-quality assessments that can be used to strengthen instructional quality. Finally, you are also a system-level thinker; you\xe2\x80\x99re constantly obsessing over the types of design principles that can work at scale, and also over the most effective ways to translate these scalable ideas into concrete practices and processes that other individuals and teams can adopt. By joining the Instructional Design department, you join a group of people working to make a difference in the world. In the countries in which we operate, the number of pupils attending school is soaring, but the quality of most schools, according to international experts, is low. Members of the Instructional Design Department invest time in producing quality learning materials to improve thousands of children\xe2\x80\x99s daily academic experience. What You Will Do

  • Design and create high-quality primary and secondary assessments, including for syllabus-aligned courses, test-prep courses, or foundational skills. This includes the test items themselves, but also the aesthetic design of the assessment.

  • Problem-solve to create solutions with limited guidance.
  • Communicate effectively across departments and to multiple levels of the organization.
  • Pitch in where needed on projects supporting other Academics departments.
  • Work in a demanding and sometimes high-stress environment, without letting the day-to-day demands prevent you from a relentless focus on driving student achievement.

  • A bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree in education or related field; a master\xe2\x80\x99s degree is preferred
  • A minimum of 2 years of classroom teaching experience
  • A minimum of 2-3 years working with assessments, either through a psychometric, statistical, or design lens

  • Willingness to jump in and help wherever necessary, no matter how big or small the task
  • Comfort working in a demanding, quickly changing, and sometimes high-stress environment
You\xe2\x80\x99re also
  • A detailed doer \xe2\x80\x93 You have a track record of getting things done. You\xe2\x80\x99re organized and responsive. You take ownership of every idea you touch and execute it to a fine level of detail, setting targets, engaging others, and doing whatever it takes to get the job done. You can multi-task dozens of such projects at once and never lose sight of the details. Likely, you have some experience in a start-up or other rapid-growth company.
  • A networking mastermind \xe2\x80\x93 You excel at meeting new people and turning them into advocates. You communicate in a clear, conscientious, and effective way in both written and oral speech. You can influence strangers in the course of a single conversation. Allies and colleagues will go to bat for your ideas. You have an existing network from prior experience in the country, preferably in the regulatory, education, or business sectors.
  • A creative problem-solver \xe2\x80\x93 Growing any business from scratch comes with massive and constant challenges. On top of that, NewGlobe works in often fragile, sometimes volatile low-resource communities and with complex government systems. You need to be flexible and ready to get everything done effectively, quickly, and affordably with the materials at hand.
  • A relentless advocate \xe2\x80\x93The children we serve and teachers we empower never leave your mind. You know them, get them, have shared a meal with them (or would be happy to in the future). You would never shrink back from shaking a parent\xe2\x80\x99s hand or picking up a crying child, no matter what the person was wearing or looked like. Every decision you make considers their benefit, experience, and value.
  • A malleable learner \xe2\x80\x93You believe you can always do better. You welcome constructive criticism and provide it freely to others. You know you only get better tomorrow when others point out where you\xe2\x80\x99ve missed things or failed today.
  • A curious investigator \xe2\x80\x93 You ask why a lot. You don\xe2\x80\x99t just take what you see and accept it. You wonder why it is that way, and are aware that the world we see is created by human choices and actions \xe2\x80\x93 and it could be different. You wonder, and see the world as wonderful even when you want to change a part of it that is unjust.
