.The Histocompatibility Medical Technologist performs a wide range of technical procedures analyzing samples from various cell sources. Technical duties will include routine patient testing, complex antibody identification, high complexity DNA analysis and on-call responsibilities for the purposes of transplantation. The Histocompatibility Medical Technologist shall maintain laboratory standards with accrediting bodies including, but not limited to CAP, CMS, CLIA, FACHT, FDA, JCAHO, UNOS and HCFA.
Essential Functions:
Records and reviews test results for accuracy, reports conclusions directly to appropriate personnel (coordinator /doctor) if needed; completes required administrative tasks and provides reports to manager/directory for review
Performs complex laboratory procedures utilized to evaluate donors and recipients for transplantation and HLA typing of Deceased Donors
Participates in competency assessments and proficiency testing
Rotates into call schedules as determined by the department
Analyzes quality control data, makes judgements concerning the results, and takes appropriate action to maintain test accuracy and precision
Assists and support quality management systems and performance improvement initiatives
Performs preventive maintenance and basic troubleshooting of instrumentation and equipment
Works independently, organizing work to meet established turnaround times
Operates laboratory information systems, personal computers, and instrument-related computer software
Other Functions:
Helps to maintains supply inventory
Performs new instrument or procedure implementation and training
Trains new employees and acts as a preceptor for medical laboratory science students
Helps with education of residents and fellows when rotating through the department
Performs limited testing outside of histocompatibility/flow cytometry to meet the needs of the laboratory
Serves on hospital and laboratory committees as requested by manager/director
Performs supervisory functions as delegated by manager/director
Acts as technical resource for the client services and specimen processing areas
Provides assistance to other laboratory team members
Maintains compliance with all company policies, procedures and standards of conduct
Complies with HIPAA privacy and security requirements to maintain confidentiality at all times
Performs other duties as assigned

Education:
Bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited college or university in medical laboratory science, medical technology, clinical laboratory science or in a related science (example, laboratory sciences such as chemistry, biochemistry, biology, microbiology, hematology, clinical microscopy, cytogenetics, blood bank, molecular biology, cytotechnology, or immunology. (required)
Experience:
Minimum one (1) year of lab experience as a Medical Technologist or Medical Laboratory Scientist (preferred)
Certification:
Certification as a Medical Technologist or Medical Laboratory Scientist by one of the following accrediting agencies is required.
+ Medical Technologist (MT) certified by the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP)
+ Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) certified by the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP)
+ Medical Technologist (MT) certified by the American Medical Technologists (AMT)
+ Medical Laboratory Scientist certified by the American Medical Technologists (AMT)
+ Medical Technologist (MT) certified by the Department of Health, Education & Welfare/US Department of Health & Human Services (HEW/HHS)
Must be detailed oriented
Must be able to problem-solve by identifying and resolving problems in a timely manner
Must have ability to motivate, encourage, and direct team members in a positive manner
Must have strong decision-making ability
Must be flexible with change in procedures and policies to keep the department moving forward
Displays good communication skills and interacts pleasantly and professionally with all co-workers, medical staff, patients and visitors
Displays thorough knowledge of Clinical Laboratory Science
Demonstrates proficiency in the skills and practices of the discipline supervised
Language Ability:
Must be able to communicate effectively in both verbal and written formats
Must have the ability to respond to common inquires or complaints from patients, families, staff and the general public
Must have the ability to write reports and presentations that conform to prescribed style and format. This includes the ability to create spreadsheets and presentations
Reasoning Ability
Able to critically think through complex situations, process improvements, evidence-based practice
Able to assist others in developing clinical reasoning skills
Computer Skills:
Must have strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office products, especially Word, Excel and PowerPoint
Must have the capacity to learn other relevant systems and databases, as needed
