If unable to fill at the Highway Designer III level, will consider applicants at the Highway Designer II level. Pay rate for this level is $22.686 per hour and requirements are: coursework, training, or experience in design, drafting, engineering, highway construction, or other construction field using CADD applications and practices.

Examples of Work

Under the close supervision of a Professional Engineer, will assist in the design of roadway projects and be responsible for technical design work of broad scope, complexity and diversity in the calculation and preparation of plans for complex roadway projects.

The essential duties are as follows:
  • Perform hydrologic/hydraulic analysis and design culverts and storm sewers.
  • Design horizontal alignment, vertical alignment, roadway cross sections and other design features.
  • Prepare preliminary and final construction project plans.
  • Prepare project cost estimates and compute final quantities.
  • Participate in and document engineering decisions, write special provisions and keep project correspondence files accurate and up to date.
  • Prepare for and participate in project meetings including plan in hand, public information, public hearing, pre-appraisal and pre-construction meetings.
  • Prepare for and participate in project field inspections.
  • Coordinate highway design projects within the Division and Department including public service agencies such as cities, counties and utilities.
Qualifications / Requirements

REQUIREMENTS:
Highway Designer II: Coursework, training, or experience in design, drafting, engineering, highway construction, or other construction field using CADD applications and practices.

Highway Designer III: Five years of experience in highway civil engineering design, including CADD applications and practices OR post-high school coursework or training in the design field mentioned above may substitute for two of the five years of experience required on a year-for-year basis.

PREFERRED:
  • Graduation from a recognized two-year vocational engineering school.
  • Experience in the preparation of highway construction plans, highway construction and inspection, highway surveying and cost estimates.
  • Experience in MicroStation, GEOPAK, and PC based drafting, roadway, earthwork, drainage, word processing and spreadsheet programs.
OTHER: Regular and reliable attendance is required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of highway design.
  • Skills in MicroStation, GEOPAK, and PC based drafting, roadway, earthwork, drainage, word processing and spreadsheet programs.
  • Skills in communication, public relations, coordinating projects, performing technical engineering design and designing complex projects.
