Job Description



What you can expect as a Government Affairs Manager: Seeking Government Affairs Manager with strong communications skills to track bills and regulations, provide strategic government relations advice, and advocate for policy priorities for a dynamic ESOP-owned financial services company.

  • Track state and federal bills and regulations of interest to Sammons Financial Group, and send regular updates on relevant bills and regulations to internal stakeholders.
  • Provide state and federal government relations functions, including helping to establish policy direction with the Director of Government Affairs and senior management on issues of importance to Sammons Financial Group. Assist in creating and implementing strategic plans for advocacy. Identify industry trends in regulation and legislation and help manage or oversee implementation of government relations strategy.
  • Provide objective, thorough, timely and well-researched written and verbal reports related to key advocacy activities, including internal state and federal updates, position papers, updates on trade association activities/meetings and political/election analysis on issues of importance to Sammons Financial Group.
  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with state and federal regulators, elected officials and their staff members, trade associations, industry leaders and other stakeholders in furtherance of Sammons Financial Group?s advocacy goals.
  • Act as a designated contact for key industry trade associations and/or related trade association committees, including required travel to certain trade association meetings, events or advocacy with policymakers.

  • As stated within the Company Attendance and Punctuality policy, regular attendance is required and expected in order to meet the business service levels and workflow demands.


What we are looking for:
  • Juris Doctorate Degree preferred
  • Minimum 5 years\' relevant experience (e.g. government relations, industry/legal or legislative experience at state or federal level) preferred
  • Experience working with life insurance and/or financial services sector preferred
  • Proven ability to deal with a wide variety of individuals, both inside and outside Sammons Financial Group in a professional, patient and responsive manner
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to identify and analyze legislative or regulatory issues and impact on Sammons Financial Group
  • Proven ability to conduct accurate and timely research and communication of such research
  • Demonstrated ability to forge and maintain relationships with key industry stakeholders and government officials
  • Criminal background check required.
Travel:
  • 25% travel to multiple trade association meetings and targeted lobbying visits to both state and federal offices throughout the year required
