POSITION TITLE: Golf Course Maintenance Superintendent REPORTS TO: Golf Course General Manager SUPERVISES: Golf Maintenance Seasonal Workers
PURPOSE OF POSITION: Responsible for supervising and coordinating various maintenance and operational activities in the upkeep and maintenance of the city\xe2\x80\x99s golf course grounds.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Supervises golf course maintenance employees through various activities including but not limited staffing, scheduling work, assigning work duties, monitoring job performance, and recommending disciplinary actions. Trains and monitors employees in the safe and efficient operation of various equipment, skills, and techniques. Prepares the departmental budget. Works closely with and coordinates with the Clubhouse staff on any issues related to golf course maintenance pertaining to maintenance scheduling. Supervises and participates in the upkeep and maintenance of the city\xe2\x80\x99s golf course grounds through various activities including but not limited to mowing, landscaping, trimming of trees, bushes and shrubs, etc.; confers with the General Manager on matters relating to the care and maintenance of the grounds and the course. Oversees the maintenance and operation of the course(s) irrigation system; makes necessary repairs as needed. Participates in the application and storage of the chemicals and equipment used for weed and/or insect control, fertilization, etc.; supervises and directs employees in the control of disease, weeds, pests, etc. to ensure proper and safe use. Supervises and participates in the propagation of turf grass. Participates in the construction and development of the golf course grounds. Supervises and participates in preventative maintenance and repair of turf grass equipment, such as mowers, weed eaters, fertilizers, sprayers, etc.; informs the General Manager of equipment needing major repairs. Operates a variety of hand and power tools and equipment including but not limited to sprayers, push mowers, riding mowers, weed eaters, trimmers, fertilizers, sprinklers, chainsaws, front-end loaders, etc., in the performance of job duties. Develop and maintain departmental policies and procedures to ensure the equitable application of state and federal laws regarding areas such as spraying applications for weed control, pesticides, and general ground maintenance for public golf courses. Maintain departmental inventory and in ordering supplies and equipment as needed in accordance with established policies. Prepares and maintains various reports and records pertaining to the duties performed such as chemical application, equipment maintenance, weather history, expenses, etc. Attends various meetings and seminars as needed. Answers inquiries from the general public; receives citizen complaints and handles situation and/or refers individual to appropriate city official for resolution. Operates standard office equipment in the performance of job duties, i.e. fax machine, copier, personal computer, calculator, etc. Establishes and maintains positive public relations with the general public, other employees, other governmental agencies and municipal officials.

ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE AND ABILITY: Knowledge of and ability to apply the methods, skills, and techniques used in the construction, establishment, care, and maintenance of golf courses. Using USGA rules and regulations. Knowledge of and ability to apply federal, state, and local laws and regulations related to ground maintenance for public golf courses. Knowledge of and ability to operate tools and equipment utilized in the care and maintenance of the golf course grounds. Knowledge of various chemicals and fertilizers and the ability to apply the methods and techniques used in their application. Knowledge of and the ability to train personnel in the occupational hazards and safety precautions of ground care and maintenance. Knowledge of and ability to learn and perform input and retrieval functions utilizing a variety of computer programs and software pertaining to the duties performed. Knowledge of city responsibilities and ability to use independent judgment in the performance of duties. Ability to maintain regular and dependable attendance on the job, including attendance and job performance for possibly prolonged periods of time when called out on short notice due to weather conditions, emergencies and similar situations of public necessity. Ability to learn and apply the techniques and skills used in the repair of sprinkler irrigation systems. Ability to work independently and safely without close supervision. Ability to analyze soil tests and turf grass issues and devise formulas to correct unhealthy conditions. Ability to plan, assign, direct and supervise the work of golf maintenance employees. Ability to deal with the general public in a courteous and tactful manner. Ability to perform job duties efficiently while managing frequent interruptions. Ability to accurately prepare and maintain records, reports and other departmental documents. Ability to plan and organize a personal work schedule, set priorities, and meet deadlines. Ability to operate standard office equipment. Ability to understand and follow both oral and written instructions. Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, in English. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, other employees, and municipal officials.
ESSENTIAL EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, EXPERIENCE, AND/OR LICENSES:
1. Must possess a valid driver\xe2\x80\x99s license at the time of hire. 2. Must possess a valid State of Nebraska commercial driver\xe2\x80\x99s license within a time frame established by the employer. 3. Must have an Associate\xe2\x80\x99s Degree in turf grass management or similar field. A Bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree in turf grass management or similar field is preferred. 4. Must have 2-4 years of experience as a golf course superintendent or as first assistant 5. Must have a Commercial Pesticide Applicators certification at the time of hire and must maintain certification as required. 6. Must have experience in all phases of golf course management and turf grass culture. 7. Must have 3 to 5 years of supervisory experience 8. Must be bondable
ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is generally performed outdoors and requires a considerable amount of physical activity including walking, standing, kneeling, bending, crouching, reaching, stooping, and climbing. The incumbent must have the ability to transport themselves to and from various locations throughout the city. Duties require the ability to tolerate an indoor and outdoor work environment, which includes contact with dirt, dust, chemicals, pesticides, noise, and inclement weather conditions.
An incumbent must have the ability to lift up to 50 lbs. on a regular basis and must possess the coordination and manual dexterity necessary to operate hand and power tools and equipment utilized in the upkeep, repair, and maintenance tasks. Must also possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull heavy equipment and tools. Work hours may occasionally be required in times of darkness. Vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts, in high/precarious places and is occasionally fumes or airborne particles, toxic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and vibration. The noise level may be moderate to intense depending on activity performed.
Work requires extensive interaction with the general public and may be stressful when dealing with irate citizens. ESSENTIAL EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, EXPERIENCE, AND/OR LICENSES:
