Job Summary

Wildlife Works seeks acandidate for the position of GIS Analyst to assist in the geographic science, analysis and reporting functions in support of the delivery of high-quality carbon offsets for our global project portfolio. The candidate will preferably have broad experience in both GIS and remote sensing techniques and should be experienced in land use / land cover change analysis, cartography and remote sensing of biomass. They will also ideally have direct experience in large scale emissions estimation, disturbance monitoring, and risk mapping. Familiarity with leading REDD+ project and program standards criteria is desired, preferably with knowledge of forest and biodiversity conservation. Along with academic credentials, practical experience and demonstrable results are also expected of the applicant.

The GIS Analyst will report to the Manager - Geospatial Science, based in Burlington, Vermont USA. The position requires not only a solid technician, but an exceptional, passionate individual with excellent communication skills, who can work in a dynamic, fast paced environment to support our international REDD+ projects. The carbon development department is responsible for delivering high-quality, science-based carbon offsets in support of Wildlife Works\xe2\x80\x99 overall goal of nature-based solutions to wildlife and forest conservation, with a focus on community co-benefits. Wildlife Works is not donor-funded; the ideal candidate will therefore be supportive of a market-based solution to climate change.

Responsibilities:

General Duties:

  • Work with an international team of geospatial professionals to execute GIS and remote sensing tasks, including data acquisition, processing, analysis and reporting.
  • Provide cartography, data management and geospatial support to the Carbon Development team and assist with project documentation.
GIS and Remote Sensing:
  • Produce cartographic, land use / land cover change analysis, risk mapping and baseline setting content to vital documentation throughout the project development lifecycle.
  • Execute and troubleshoot GIS workflows and perform geoprocessing tasks.
  • Research, acquire and organize shapefiles, features and other geographic information.
  • Support risk mapping and baseline setting methods.
Forestry and Carbon accounting:
  • Assist with forest carbon accounting, including determining project area boundaries, biomass inventory sample design, and development of biomass maps.
Documentation:
  • Prepare and present reports and visualizations of land cover change and emission reduction data to internal and external stakeholders.
Research:
  • Provide background information for our REDD+ projects, including baseline setting techniques, land/use land cover change methods and risk mapping.
Requirements
  • Candidates should possess at minimum a bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree in physical geography, Remote Sensing, Geography, Environmental Science, or a related field. Master\xe2\x80\x99s degree preferred.
  • Applied experience in GIS or remote sensing.
  • Strong experience with GIS software such as ArcGIS Pro, with programming skills in Python or R and experience with GIS workflows and geoprocessing.
  • Knowledge of remote sensing processing techniques for forest carbon accounting, including the use of both optical and active data products.
  • A focus on land use / land cover change and forest dynamics is a plus. Candidates with demonstrated applied conservation GIS experience will be favored.
  • Familiarity with REDD+ implementation and carbon accounting methodologies is desired.
  • Effective communication and presentation skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Intermediate to advanced computers skills, especially with Microsoft Office (MS Excel and MS Word experience is required).
  • VBA knowledge for excel and familiarity with Adobe products (Acrobat, Photoshop).
  • Proficient communication skills, organized, thorough and highly detail oriented. Ability to prioritize manage workload independently.
  • Willingness to work across multiple time zones with team members from a diversity of cultures.
  • Written and spoken fluency in English is required. Written and/or fluency in French, Spanish, Portuguese is a plus.
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States.
  • Preference will be given to candidates located in Burlington, VT.
