The Materials Testing Laboratory provides technical support regarding the design, use, application, evaluation and research associated with all construction materials. The Geotechnical Section provides testing and design of the geologic soils and bedrock formations to insure stability of the roadway facility.
As a valued new employee to NMDOT, you may be eligible to receive three (3) days of administrate leave upon your start date. This is applicable to external hires not within the State of New Mexico Government.
Why does the job exist?
This position is responsible for leading personnel in the Geotechnical Design Unit, evaluating geological and geotechnical conditions of highway features such as steepened earth and rock slopes, bridge foundations and drainage structures to ensure safety of the traveling public.
How does it get done?
This position will lead and manage Geotechnical Design Personnel, generate and review geotechnical reports, foundation reports, specifications, and design plans.
Provide design and construction support by applying American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials, Federal Highway Administration Design Policies for Geotechnical Design.

Minimum Qualification
Bachelor of Science Degree from an accredited college or university in a relevant engineering discipline with licensure and five (5) years of engineering experience, one (1) of which must be as a Licensed Professional Engineer. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling nine (9) years may substitute for the required education and experience. Must be certified by the NMBLPEPS as a Licensed Professional Engineer in good standing within six (6) months of hire.
Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive a Defensive Driving Course certificate as a condition of continued employment.
Working Conditions
Work is performed on an office setting, exposure to Visual/Video Display terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer, virtual meetings and telephone usage with extended periods of sitting/standing. Position is primarily in the office, but will require occasional field visits, possible overnight trips, working outside in inclement weather, and visiting active construction sites in highway environments.
