Mechanical Design Engineering Manager — Machine Tools

Sterling Heights, MI, United States

Job Description

Mechanical Design Engineering Manager -- Machine Tools
Imagine starting your week by reviewing a new gantry concept, walking the shop floor to validate assembly tooling, and joining a customer FAT where your team's spindle design earns unanimous approval. That's a typical rhythm in this hands-on leadership role guiding the full lifecycle of advanced machine tools and automation systems--from early requirements and concept modeling to production, commissioning, and site acceptance.
As the leader of our mechanical engineering group, you will mentor a high-performing team while setting the bar for technical excellence. You'll coordinate closely with electrical, controls, software, manufacturing, quality, and sales to ensure seamless product integration, on-time schedules, disciplined budgets, and uncompromising safety and quality.
What you'll do

  • Coach, develop, and motivate mechanical engineers and technical staff; cultivate a collaborative, accountable, growth-oriented culture.
  • Own the mechanical design process end-to-end: requirements capture, conceptual design, detailed engineering, and manufacturing support.
  • Set design standards for precision components including chucks, spindles, gantry systems, and hydraulic/pneumatic assemblies.
  • Plan and supervise project schedules, budgets, scope, and deliverables to meet customer expectations and company goals.
  • Review/approve engineering drawings, Bills of Materials (BOMs), and calculations; enforce compliance with ISO, ASME, and applicable safety regulations.
  • Partner with manufacturing engineering to define assembly procedures, tooling, and test processes; troubleshoot issues on existing machines and systems.
  • Lead continuous improvement and lean initiatives to drive efficiency and cost reductions.
  • Collaborate with purchasing and suppliers on sourcing strategies, prototyping, and design-for-manufacture feasibility; engage in customer meetings and participate in FAT/SAT.
Qualifications & Experience
Education
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field (required); Master's in Engineering or Business Administration (preferred).
Experience
  • 7+ years in machine design or industrial equipment engineering.
  • 3+ years in a leadership or management capacity.
  • Background with custom/build-to-order machinery or automation systems (preferred).
Technical depth
  • Proficient with 3D CAD (SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Creo, etc.).
  • Strong command of mechanical design fundamentals: structural integrity, fluid dynamics, and heat transfer.
  • Familiar with CNC machining, automation systems, and industrial safety standards.
  • Experienced with ERP/MRP tools and engineering change management.
Soft skills
  • Exceptional leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Meticulous organization and attention to detail.
  • Ability to distill complex technical topics for cross-functional teams and customers.
