Description of Work
The Western North Carolina Farmers Market is a state-owned facility covering 36 acres. It is comprised of retail and wholesale areas, a garden center and restaurant. The primary purpose of the market is to provide an outlet for farmers to sell their products and a place for consumers to buy those products. Fruit and vegetable inspection services and general agricultural marketing assistance are also available. The market is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week year-round. This position is subject to work any hours.

This position serves as a gatekeeper at the WNC Farmers Market. The Gatekeeper regulates entry, collects selling and/or delivery charges, enforces market rules and regulations, and provides security. In the absence of other management, they receive and resolve issues on the market as they arise. Gate personnel serve as the first point of contact for persons entering the market and present a lasting impression to the market\xe2\x80\x99s customers and vendors.
Additional responsibilities include:

  • Ensure orderly flow of traffic, deliveries, and vendor operations across the 36-acre facility.
  • Collect delivery fees and vendor payments made at the gatehouse.
  • 24/7 monitoring of farmer and vendor operations to prevent disputes, vandalism, and theft.
  • Monitor market operations including sanitation, safety, security, and fire alarm reporting.
  • Facilitate daily unlocking and locking of retail Market Shops.
  • Support data collection for tracking commodities entering the market, daily vendor/farmer stall rental verification reports, and traffic counts.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies
  • Experience in fees collection, record keeping, and/or writing receipts
  • Working knowledge of program services, policies, and procedures.
  • Ability to explain and interpret program information to clients/customers and staff.
  • Ability to use correct spelling, punctuation, and specialized vocabulary.
  • Ability to present ideas in written form
  • Ability to utilize office equipment and other technology (software and systems) to meet work needs.
  • Ability to understand issues, identify problems and opportunities to determine the appropriate course of action.
MANAGEMENT PREFERENCES:
  • Experience working with computers.
  • Experience working with the general public.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
You may qualify by an equivalent combination of education and experience, either through years of education or years of directly related experience or a combination of both.

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and one year of administrative experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
