West Virginia University Digital Services is currently accepting application for a Front-End Web Developer.

About the Opportunity

Assists with design and front-end development of high profile WVU sites and marketing projects for the web. Designs for WVU communication for Info Stations (digital signage). Responsible for research, development, and implementation of latest web technologies, including responsive design, flexible grid systems, and progressive enhancement techniques. Works on development of methodology/process for designing websites and streamlining the web design process. Oversight for all web design for WVU sites including blogs and major marketing projects. Must understand various content management systems. Must be an expert in Adobe Photoshop, Fireworks, HTML5, and CSS3, and familiar with jQuery/JavaScript. 1 year experience in various categories. Will report to the Director of University Relations -Digital.

What You\'ll Do
  • Leadership, Development of Advanced Techniques.
  • Design for high profile WVU websites, including many sites that support Student Life, Student Engagement, Honors, and initiatives for the President\xe2\x80\x99s Office around student engagement.
  • Develop design process for creating websites, including planning, research, development, testing, and implementation. Specifically creating process documentation centered around the goals and objectives of the Provost\xe2\x80\x99s Office clients.
  • Meet Federal accessibility WCAG2 requirements.
  • Programming/Applications
  • Assist in developing and designing web applications, including JavaScript.
  • Design common elements (headers/footers) and templates for university applications.
  • Integrate jQuery (JavaScript) components with websites.
  • Designing Websites
  • Attends initial intake meetings with clients.
  • Responsible for understanding audience needs, user actions, content hierarchy for each website.
  • Provides concepts, wireframes, and examples to clients.
  • Designs website templates using Adobe Photoshop.
  • Follows the concepts of the WVU Web Brand Design System.
  • Hand-code websites in HTML5 and CSS3.
  • Perform testing across a variety of internet browsers (all versions of Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, Safari, etc.).
  • Edit photos (color correction, crop) for use on websites.
  • Ensure cross-browser, cross-platform, cross-device functionality.
  • Ensure usability by assisting with information architecture, designing user-friendly navigation systems.
  • Ensure fast performance using clean markup and optimized images to reduce page load time.
  • Ensures websites are accessible to people with disabilities.
  • Integrated Marketing
  • Develop HTML email templates.
  • Design digital signage graphics for student communication.
  • Miscellaneous
  • Updating and managing website content for high profile marketing projects.
  • Provide customer service to anyone at the University (helping withCleanSlate training, making template changes, providing appropriate files for branding usage, answering general questions, troubleshooting, being a resource.
  • Present information at Designer meetings and the Prof Tech Design co-hort meetings.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree in visual art, Graphic Design, Multimedia, or related field.
  • A minimum of one (1) year experience involving:
  • Experience working on Web design mockups in Photoshop or Illustrator.
  • Experience creating html email.
  • Experience integrating designs into content management systems.
  • Experience writing CSS, HTML5, and JavaScript.
  • Experience converting Photoshop templates to HTML5 and CSS.
  • Experience developing responsive, mobile-friendly websites.
Knowledge
  • Expert knowledge of modern prototyping tools (such as Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Sketch, etc).
  • Expert knowledge of responsive web design, progressive enhancement, HTML5, CSS3, Sass and JavaScript.
  • Expert knowledge of asset creation for the web and how to convert a design from PSD (or otherwise) to clean, concise, and maintainable HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
  • Knowledge of current accessibility techniques and best practices.
  • Knowledge of working with content management systems, how to create themes, and how to integrate client requested functionality into a website.
  • Knows how to create html email.
  • Knowledge of Gulp, Node.js Autoprefixer, and jQuery a plus.
Skills
  • Demonstrated knowledge in coding.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of creating html email and templates.
  • Demonstrated skills in HTML5, CSS3, and creating responsive websites.
  • Demonstrated skills with Adobe Photoshop or Fireworks.

  • Must demonstrate usability and accessibility compliance.
  • Knowledge of WCAG 2.0 standards.

  • Ability to do browser testing and familiarity with common cross-browser issues.

  • Ability to find solutions to technical problems.
  • Ability to track campaigns related to email.
  • Ability to learn software such as Siteimprove, ConceptBoard, etc. to support website development.
