Responsible for performing work of mechanic within the Fleet Department to properly repair and maintain gasoline and diesel-powered cars, trucks and other various types of equipment. Performs functions ranging from prioritizing duties to participating in repair and maintenance functions necessary to completing assigned tasks.
Diagnoses, installs, services and maintains the City's fleet of vehicles/equipment including mechanical, electrical, computerized circuitry, refrigeration, ignition, transmission/transaxle, brake, fuel and exhaust
Diagnoses and performs extensive preventive maintenance and repairs on heavy-duty diesel equipment such as Case, John Deere, Peterbilt, Allison (transmission), Caterpillar, International, GM, Ford, etc.
Performs preventive maintenance and repairs on light and medium-weight vehicles and performs hydraulic preventive maintenance and repairs on heavy-duty, diesel-powered vehicles
Performs engine tune-ups including electronic fuel injection systems and diesel/gasoline engines, using appropriate electronic diagnostic tools, such as computerized troubleshooting equipment, oscilloscope, calibration light, etc.
Diagnoses and repairs gasoline and diesel engines and electronic fuel injection systems, including replacing/rebuilding worn parts
Replaces defective chassis parts, i.e., shock, tie-rod ends, ball joint suspensions, brake shoes, wheel bearings, etc.
Performs repairs on radiator leaks, heater cores, air conditioning and other related components
Diagnoses and repairs light duty, medium duty, and heavy-duty automatic transmissions
Performs routine preventive maintenance including all types of fluid level checks and lubrication checks
Maintains records of time and materials used on the job, documents equipment condition and status, updates any changes and submits log as required; informs supervisor of materials needed to perform job
Ability to get along with customers and co-workers
Maintains regular and punctual on-site attendance

Minimum Qualifications/Acceptable Equivalency:
High School diploma or GED equivalent
Two (2) years of paid professional experience in automotive mechanical work requiring heavy and light-duty equipment diagnostics and repairs
Must have or obtain at least two (2) Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certifications within one (1) year of employment
OR
Any combination of related education, experience, certifications and licenses that will result in a candidate successfully performing the essential functions of the job

Preferences:
Bilingual in Spanish and English
ASE Certified
Completion of an accredited truck and heavy equipment technical school
Skill in using advanced, computerized diagnostic equipment for repairs, services and maintenance

Conditions of Employment:
Must possess and maintain a valid Class "B" or higher CDL
OR
must possess a valid Class C driver license with a good driving record and the ability to obtain a Class B CDL with within six (6) months of employment
Must pass a drug screen, driver's license check, criminal history background check, and social security number verification
Must pass a physical examination
Must have or obtain and maintain at least two (2) Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certifications within one (1) year of employment
Must be able to work a schedule of Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. - 11:00 p.m.; must be able to work overtime and emergency call-in, as needed or determine by the business need of the department
