Fire Chief

The Charter Township of Ypsilanti, Michigan is seeking a highly motivated fire service professional who is a skilled leader to serve as Fire Chief. The Fire Department has 27 career employees and operates out of three fire stations serving a population of approximately 57,000 covering 32 sq. miles.

The Fire Chief is responsible for the administration and supervision of the Township Fire Department in the protection of life and property and in the prevention and control of fire. Applicants must have considerable knowledge of the principles, methods, laws and regulation relating to fire fighting and incident management. Must have a good understanding of business practices, budget administration, employee relations, and public relations and be able to demonstrate leadership skills through effective oral and written communications.

Bachelor degree in Fire Science, Business Administration or a closely related field is required. Michigan Fire Fighter Training Council Fire Officer I, II & III or equivalent (NFA) Executive Fire Officer, IAFC Chief Officer and/or Chief Executive Officer, NFPA Fire Inspector I & II, EMT-Basic, NIMS 100-800, certifications are desirable. Ten years of firefighting experience with at least five years of supervisory experience required. Outside applicants must hold positions functionally equivalent to or above the rank of fire captain/shift commander in the Ypsilanti Township Fire Department. Driver\'s license with satisfactory driver\'s record is a condition of employment. Qualified applicants will be invited to participate in the Civil Service Examination for Fire Chief which will include both written and oral components. Salary range $95,000 - $98,000 with excellent fringe benefits.
