Job Description

The Financial Coach is part of a suite of services aimed to build financial housing resiliency and health for individuals facing financial barriers. The primary focus of the Financial Coach is to work with clients to assess financial health through one-on-one coaching and then develop a tailored set of recommendations to support clients to improve their financial position and pursue their goals, including credit score; budgeting; saving; utilization of quality financial services; and asset development. The Financial Coach is dedicated to helping low to moderate income families and individuals in our FOC program to ensure that families reach their educational, financial, and asset goals. This position is part of the Financial Opportunity Center portfolio within the broader Impact & Innovations Department and is grounded in our core values of home, justice, respect, hope, and community.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities



Financial Management and Budgeting Support

Take initiative and conduct effective client outreach. Provide ongoing support and continue to actively engage clients to promote financial health. Work directly with clients to provide high-quality financial coaching via individualized counseling. Assist clients in creating a budget to manage rent and other essential expenses, helping them build financial habits that support housing retention. Connect clients with financial literacy resources, savings programs, or employment support as needed. Provide ongoing support for tracking expenses and adjusting budgets based on changes in income or housing costs. Develop and implement plans of action and provide tools, resources, and accountability for participants to assist them to meet their goals.
Connect Clients with Support Services for Sustained Stability

Refer clients to mental health services, addiction recovery programs, or health care providers as needed to address underlying challenges to housing stability. Coordinate with job placement programs or workforce development agencies to support clients in increasing income stability. Facilitate workshops or resources on tenant rights and responsibilities to empower clients in managing their housing relationships. Identify and refer participants to other resources and services needed to achieve their financial goal advise clients on proactive steps to take if they face potential eviction or rental arrears.
Work Directly with Clients to provide high-quality financial coaching via individualized counseling

Achieve program goals for client impact and service outputs. Document services and gather data for client tracking and program reporting and evaluation, utilizing a proprietary client management software tool. Identify, cultivate, and maintain relationships with key community partners. Deliver presentations on personal finance topics and our services. Adhere to all guidelines related to confidentiality. Follow regulatory and quality-control requirements. Works to ensure that satisfaction is a priority of the coaching program. Actively participates in process reviews to improve the effectiveness of financial coaching services.

Qualifications



Minimum of 1 year of experience in financial coaching, banking, asset development, personal finance, education and/or a related economic development field. Specialized knowledge in financial empowerment services to low- and moderate-income individuals. Experience utilizing software to track client progress and evaluate/report data. Familiarity with affordable housing issues in the Charlottesville area. Working knowledge in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Share Point. Proven ability to work with little or no direct supervision on daily basis. Ability to organize time efficiently, prioritize tasks and perform self-directed tasks. Willingness and ability to travel. Must have a valid driver's license and a satisfactory driving record. Must own or consistently have a vehicle available for use as needed. Ability to successfully pass a background check and other pre-employment screening.

Physical Requirements



Able to lift & carry items up to 15 lbs. Able to sit at a desk comfortably while working on a computer, for extended periods. Able to hear and speak to customers in person and/or by phone. Able to see and read on computer screen and paper. Able to use hands and fingers to operate office equipment (i.e. computer, copier, phone). Ability to stand for extended periods of time. Ability to move about the property and through apartments; ability to negotiate stairs.
