Position Summary

The Financial Clearance Coordinator is responsible for performing financial clearance functions, including but not limited to: Verifying insurance eligibility and benefits; ensuring authorizations on file are accurate; confirming valid order on file for scheduled service; and providing price estimates and waivers to scheduled patients. The Financial Clearance Coordinator works closely with Patient Registration, Central Scheduling, Referrals, Utilization Review, Epic, and leadership teams to ensure all patients are financially cleared and screened for financial risk before receiving services.

Principle Duties and Responsibilities include:

  • Verifying insurance eligibility and benefits prior to service for patients with scheduled services (e.g. surgery and imaging)
  • Calling payers to verify eligibility and benefits for unscheduled inpatient services
  • Reviewing authorizations on file to ensure they are complete and accurate and contacting payers if an authorization needs to be updated (e.g. a procedure was scheduled without adequate notice to the authorization team)
  • Creating waivers for registration teams in the event an authorization has not been secured but the patient or provider wishes to proceed with the scheduled service
  • Preparing price estimates for patients with scheduled services
  • Communicating patient liability clearly and accurately while adequately explaining concepts such as deductibles, coinsurance, and/or co-payments and how they may affect the cost of care
  • Explaining how non-covered and out-of-network services factor into the out-of-pocket cost
  • Other duties as assigned by the Supervisor
Qualifications

Education
  • Associate Degree in business or healthcare related field, preferred
Experience
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in credit/collections, insurance authorizations, or other comparable healthcare experience is required
Licensure/Certifications
  • CHAA: Certified Healthcare Access Associate through the National Association of Healthcare Access Management, preferred
