The Facilities Assistant supports the Facilities Director in ensuring the shelter campus remains safe, clean, and functional. This hands-on role includes housekeeping, kitchen responsibilities, donation organization, and basic maintenance assistance. The ideal candidate is self-directed, observant, and ready to take initiative to address needs as they arise. This position is vital to maintaining a trauma-informed, welcoming, and hygienic environment for all guests and staff.
Key Responsibilities
Assist with cleaning and sanitizing all interior spaces including dorms, bathrooms, hallways, common areas, and program rooms
Help prepare and serve breakfast from the food truck on designated mornings
Sort, organize, and store incoming donations in coordination with shelter leadership
Support the Facilities Director with building walk-throughs, small repairs, and supply restocking
Maintain exterior cleanliness including sidewalks, entryways, patio, and dumpster areas
Monitor inventory of cleaning supplies and communicate restock needs
Help set up and clean spaces used for programming, meals, or guest events
Provide general support for daily facility operations as directed by the Facilities Director
Demonstrate initiative by identifying and completing tasks without waiting for instruction
Maintain strong professional boundaries and contribute to a positive, respectful shelter culture
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent
Prior experience in housekeeping, facilities support, or food service preferred
Strong work ethic, attention to detail, and willingness to take initiative
Ability to lift and move supplies, furniture, or equipment up to 50 lbs
Comfortable working both independently and as part of a team
Flexible and adaptable in a fast-paced, guest-centered environment
Commitment to maintaining a clean, safe, and respectful shelter space
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working in a shelter or residential setting
Basic maintenance, janitorial, or handyman skills
Food Handler's Certification or willingness to obtain
Bilingual or bicultural applicants encouraged to apply
Work Environment
The Facilities Assistant works throughout the Interfaith Sanctuary Shelter Home campus, indoors and outdoors, and is frequently on their feet. Must be comfortable interacting with guests experiencing homelessness, mental health challenges, or recovery needs in a supportive and non-judgmental way.
