Executive Director \xe2\x80\x93 Great Lakes Children\xe2\x80\x99s Museum \xe2\x80\x93 Traverse City, MI Overview: The Executive Director is the only employee of the Great Lakes Children\xe2\x80\x99s Museum Trustees. The Executive Director drives vision and mission and conducts the affairs of the Great Lakes Children\xe2\x80\x99s Museum by interpreting and applying policies, limitations and exclusions adopted by the Trustees while selecting, leading and cultivating staff. Responsibilities: Strategic Planning

  • Conducts, in partnership with the Trustees, Staff, Community and Museum consultants, strategic planning with a special emphasis on long-range visioning and organizational structure.
Budget, Finance & Fundraising
  • Works with department heads to prepare the event schedule and associated budget for the coming fiscal year to be presented to Trustees at the June annual meeting.
  • Briefs department heads on the approved budget and fund-raising target for the next fiscal year.
  • Works with the Development & Fundraising Events Manager to secure major gifts and grants to finance the Museum\xe2\x80\x99s operations and capital improvements.
  • Commits Museum resources within delegated authority as necessary to further the Museum\xe2\x80\x99s best interests.
  • Exercises final staff authority for adherence to operating and program budgets.
Marketing
  • Directs, in accordance with professional standards and ethics, the Museum\xe2\x80\x99s public affairs activities including advertising, marketing, public and governmental relations.
  • Serves as the Museum\xe2\x80\x99s principal spokesperson.
  • Maintains effective relationships between the Museum and;
  • civic groups and governmental agencies/officials,
  • collaborating organizations, and
  • peer organizations.
  • Creates and maintains community relationships to ensure the Museum serves its community, including children and families from disadvantaged and marginalized populations.
Operations
  • Provides overall supervision of the planning, development and coordination of all aspects of the Museum.
  • Remains up-to-date on progress of additions/updates to main gallery displays, programs, outreach and use of the rotating gallery spaces.
  • Manages, through appropriate personnel, the daily activities of all Museum departments and operations with special attention to the Museum\xe2\x80\x99s core education-related activities including grants and awards, educational and outreach programs and exhibits.
  • Maintains proficiency at running the Museum including opening and closing processes and operating the point-of-sale system.
  • Reviews ongoing daily tasks to identify items which could be handled by a volunteer.
  • Reviews, maintains, updates and releases a rubric for selecting appropriate partners for using the rotating gallery.
  • Reviews, revises and signs any and all contracts and MOUs which could obligate the Museum financially or programmatically as allowed by the bylaws and Trustee directions.
Personnel
  • Develops and maintains comprehensive policies and procedures manuals, including all necessary personnel policies.
  • Responsible for all personnel actions, including final authority for hiring and termination decisions within budget limitations.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of significant developments and trends in the fields of non-profit development, museum leadership, museum operations and museum education.
  • Provides guidance for staff and personal professional development.
  • Works with the Trustee Oversight Committee to establish and maintain a system for cultivating, recruiting, developing and maintaining engaged Trustees.
Record-Keeping
  • Takes detailed minutes of all Trustee committee meetings highlighting motions/actions agreed to by each committee.
  • Organizes and stores minutes of all Trustee meetings at a minimum electronically on a centralized file storage system.
Reporting
  • Prepares and submits all local, state and federal reports required to maintain non-profit status in a timely manner.
Required Meetings:
  • All Trustee Meetings & Subcommittee Meetings
  • Scheduled donor one-on-one and donor group meetings
  • Monthly STEAM/Maker Alliance leadership meetings
  • Chamber After Hours and Rotary Meetings as requested by the Development & Fundraising Events Manager
  • Annual staff planning meeting
  • Leadership planning meetings
Supervises: Impact Manager, Development & Fundraising Events Manager, Administrative Assistant Education & Experience:
  • Bachelors Degree or Equivalent Work Experience
  • Certification(s) preferred but not required
  • Relatable fundraising and/or grant writing experience (major gift solicitation, planned gift solicitation a plus)
  • Previous museum leadership experience preferred but not required
