Job Description


Summary This position is responsible for collection, processing, maintenance, and disposal of evidence and property. It includes some investigative work as well as associated paperwork. This position is under the direct supervision of the Investigation Major. Definition and Examples of Work

Maintains chain of custody of property and evidence

  • Receives, stores, and provides for proper delivery and/or testing of evidence/property items related to investigations and court proceedings.
  • Accurately accesses, inputs, and retrieves information into computer database(s)
  • Assists with search warrants
  • Conduct audits and inventory of property and evidence
  • Trains patrol deputies and investigators on collection, packaging, data entry and paperwork for property and evidence (biannually).
  • Works with local, state, and national agencies on evidence handling, storage, and testing.

Conducts research for cases
  • Research cases to see if property and evidence can be disposed of.

Purges property and evidence
  • Prepares property and evidence for auction.
  • Prepares firearms for department trade.
  • Properly disposes of property and evidence that contains biohazard substances or materials

Works with forensic labs for evidence testing
  • Collects forensic evidence including fuming/dusting for latent fingerprints, processing vehicles for latent fingerprints/DNA, uses alternate light source to locate biological material.

Assists public.
  • Address citizen concerns and inquiries regarding processing, storage, and return of evidence.

Disseminates evidence to attorneys and assists in court proceedings.
  • Testifies in court when required.

Additional duties may be assigned as business needs require.
  • Basic literacy and numerical functions
  • Bi-lingual preferred
  • Ability to communicate and write effectively
  • Use of common clerical routines and basic office equipment (typewriter, computer, copier)
  • Knowledge of a body of standardized rules, procedures, or operations
  • Microsoft Office
  • Open Fox, Enterpol, Web Portal
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and to write clear and comprehensive reports.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of information.
  • General knowledge of court procedures.
  • General knowledge of Kansas statutes related to law enforcement.
  • Knowledge of evidence and property storage procedures
  • Knowledge of use of law enforcement equipment, including restraint devices, weapons, and communications devices.
  • Valid Driver\'s license
  • NCIC certification
  • Field test kit certification
  • First Aid and CPR certification upon hire
  • Defensive Driving certification upon hire
  • Security Awareness training upon hire
  • Evidence Room Management certification at six months in position
  • Occasional travel
  • Occasional overtime
  • Regular and reliable attendance onsite and work location
