The Work You Will Do:

This is a highly professional supervisory and managerial position in the District\'s Permitting Program.

Where You Will Work:

South District - The South District Office is located in Fort Myers. Fort Myers is popular for its great beaches that line the Gulf Coast, shopping and fishing. Attractions include the historic Henry Ford and Thomas Edison estates, downtown Fort Myers, with its many restaurants and nightlife, as well as nearby Naples and the islands of Captiva and Sanibel. It is a sports enthusiast haven as the Spring Training home of the Boston Red Sox and Minnesota Twins. The South District covers 8 counties (Lee, Collier, Charlotte, DeSoto, Sarasota, Hendry, Glades and Highlands).

Your Specific Responsibilities:

Provides leadership for the Potable Water Permitting Program while becoming familiar with the Wastewater, Waste, Water, and Air Permitting Programs for future cross training purposes. Demonstrates a positive and supportive attitude for upper management, is a team player and leads by example.

Reviews all reports and correspondence prepared by staff with respect to quality and accuracy of information provided for public record, including agency actions and action items. Modifies and critiques documents as necessary. Advises and assists staff personnel in complex investigations and resolutions.

Ensures that permits are accurate and coordinates as needed with the Compliance and Enforcement staff to ensure that the permit for facilities addresses necessary corrective action, where appropriate. Ensures that project clearance and approval to place facilities into operation is completed in a timely manner.

Works with the appropriate Division staff to implement and streamline programmatic processes as a means of continuous process improvement. Builds and motivates the Permitting team by engaging staff in cross training and process improvement activities.

Assists with other duties as may be requested by the Permitting Program Administrator.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Communication:
  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally in small group and large group setting
Technical Expertise:
  • Knowledge of scientific and environmental principals as they pertain to the Agency\'s regulatory programs
  • Ability to understand and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies and procedures relating to Potable Water, Wastewater, Water, and Air Permitting.
  • Skilled in problem solving, managing conflict and negotiating mutually acceptable outcomes
  • Skilled in dealing with the public in a tactful and courteous manner.
  • Ability to use personal computer, including Microsoft Office products, internet resources, etc.
Team Building:
  • Skilled in mentoring and training subordinates in the proper performance of their duties and responsibilities.
  • Skilled in team building and responding to and correcting subordinate disciplinary issues in a timely and effective manner.
  • Ability to effectively manage subordinates.
  • Ability to work independently and within a team in support of management objectives.
Support Organizational Efficiency
  • Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments for staff.
  • Ability to prepare and implement a training plan for subordinates.
  • Skilled in managing and critically evaluating data and preparing program metrics reports to assess and meet required Levels of Service.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Valid Florida Driver\'s License
  • A Bachelor\'s or higher degree from an accredited college or university with a major in a scientific field.
  • Are a current employee of the Florida Department of Environmental Protection
  • Ability to travel overnight when required
Working hours: Variable hours, minimum 40 per week. Position requires occasional evening meetings, out of town travel.
