Environmental and Sustainability Specialist

Ecovyst Kansas City, KS (Onsite) Full-Time

Job Details

The successful candidate\'s office will be located at the Ecovyst Catalyst Technologies Kansas City site.

The position reports to the VP of Environment and Sustainability for the Corporation located in Malvern, PA and is part of the Corporate Environment and Sustainability (ES) Department.

Responsibilities:

  • Provides direct environmental support to the Kansas City (KS) site with additional environmental and Sustainability responsibilities as assigned by the VP, ES.
  • Provides support in the management and servicing of the environmental components of the RC14001\xc2\xae/ISO14001 Management System.
  • Analyzes the work environment, develops processes/programs and provides technical support to front-line leadership on matters related to environmental compliance, pollution prevention and sustainability.
  • Conducts field and site inspections to assist the operating sites in adhering to laws, regulations and Ecovyst policies governing environmental compliance.
  • Manages and/or performs the collection and submission of data required to satisfy environmental permit and reporting requirements (air, water, land). Must be able to interpret the technical information. Will prepare reports for use by company personnel and regulatory agencies. In some cases, will develop or oversee the preparation of permitting documents, possibly including multiple air permit modifications each year, and environmental reports by third-party providers.
  • Responsible for both haz/nonhaz waste compliance in conjunction with site-based personnel and plant management.
  • Develops and manages initiatives to promote a proactive environmental culture, including processes designed to increase employee involvement, education, and recognition by participation in environmental committees, environmental Perfect Day Event (loss of containment, deviations and enforcement action) investigations, training, environmental matters and compliance/internal auditing.
  • Collects and interprets environmental data to identify trends and/or causal factors, such as system/equipment failure, human error, incomplete or faulty decision-making, or a weakness in existing policies, practices and regulations.
  • Investigates loss of containment incidents and non-compliance events to determine contributing factors and recommends remedial action to prevent reoccurrence.
  • Liaises with regulatory agencies on matters related to reporting, investigations/inspections and/or negotiating compliance concerns.
  • Develops and delivers regulatory required training related to environmental performance.
  • Assists in the tracking of sustainability performance metrics related to the environment, preparation of replies to customer/supply chain inquiries or questionnaires and other sustainability matters as assigned by the VP, ES. Will be responsible for leading/participating in Life Cycle Analysis in support of overall Sustainability efforts.
  • Additional responsibilities and changes in responsibilities may be made at the discretion of the VP, ES.
Requirements:
  • University degree in Engineering (e.g., ChE, EnvE or equivalent) or Environmental Science.
  • A minimum of 10+ years of environmental experience in chemicals/related process industry, with 5-10 years resident at an operating site. Must have experience in dealing with air, waste, storm water and subsurface issues.
  • Excellent knowledge of federal, state and local HSE regulations. Prior experience in providing environmental service to US operations and knowledge of US federal environmental regulations is highly desirable.
  • Ability to travel if necessary.
  • Must be proficient in serving as a change agent within the operating environment and working with the organization/management to improve environmental and sustainability performance.
  • Ability to address and solve complex environmental issues from a universal perspective.
  • Must be an independent, self-motivated individual with the ability to multi-task and administer a broad range of duties including: resolving concerns; counseling plant management and front-line employees; and providing technical interpretation of policies and procedures. Must be able to work independently without day-to-day supervision.
  • Ability to perform physical inspections of all operating areas at assigned sites.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and computer skills.
  • Ability to coach, teach and counsel and be comfortable speaking to groups.
  • Must be comfortable in dealing with all levels of employees (from front-line employees to senior management).
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret regulations, professional journals, technical procedures and technical results.
  • Ability to communicate technical information to non-technical personnel.
  • Ability to work in a matrix environment and influence/motivate diverse teams to achieve a unified goal.
  • Ability to provide flexible judgment and solutions to concerns and/or opportunities.
