Class Summary

Base Hiring Salary Ranges:
Engineer I: $57,685 - $67,059

Engineer II: $62,734 - $72,928

Engineer III: $74,192 - $86,248


The Engineer I, II, and III roles will perform multiple aspects of the review process requiring more experience and skill in the review, approval, and permitting of commercial and residential site development projects as well as supporting larger and more complex projects.
Essential Duties:

  • Reviewing development plans for compliance with applicable regulations and adherence to mandated guidelines pertaining specifically to stormwater.
  • Communicating plan review matters with design professionals and internal staff.
  • Providing technical assistance to other County staff, outside contractors, and the general public regarding engineering issues.
  • Reviewing various reports, zoning conditions, recorded plats, GIS maps, and easements related to development projects.
  • Researching, investigating, and evaluating complaints and inquiries received by the public or management regarding stormwater issues.
  • Maintaining records associated with plan review.
  • Performing other duties of a similar nature or level.
Minimum Qualifications
Engineer I (Grade C42(1)):
  • Bachelor\'s Degree in Engineering
  • Valid driver\'s license from the state of residency
Engineer II (Grade C43(1)):
  • Bachelor\'s Degree in Engineering
  • One year of related experience
  • Valid driver\'s license from the state of residency
Engineer III (Grade C45(1)):
  • Bachelor\'s Degree in Engineering
  • Two years of progressively responsible engineering experience
  • Valid driver\'s license from the state of residency

The Department of Planning and Development\'s function is to promote and enhance the quality of life of residents, visitors, property owners, and businesses of Gwinnett County through programs and services that encourage high-quality development, maintenance, and revitalization of existing neighborhoods. The department consists of the Administration Division, Planning Division, and Development Division. Within the Planning Division, the Building Plan Review Section is responsible for the review and authorization to permit the construction of commercial buildings, commercial structures, and commercial interior projects located in unincorporated Gwinnett County. Commercial buildings include all buildings or structures other than one and two-family dwellings or townhomes. Commercial structures include site retaining walls, cell tower installations, racking systems, and signage foundations.

The 14 departments that make up the executive side are Police Services, Fire and Emergency Services, Corrections, Communications, Support Services, Financial Services, Community Services, Human Resources, Information Technology Services, Law, Planning and Development, Water Resources, Child Advocacy & Juvenile Services, and Transportation. Each department is run by a director who is charged with managing operations in a manner which stresses the County\'s values.

In addition to the executive side of County government, certain services are provided through Constitutional officers and independent elected officials. These external offices are created by the Georgia Constitution or through state law. In Gwinnett, they include the Sheriff, Tax Commissioner, District Attorney, Solicitor, Probate Court Judge, and Chief Magistrate.
