Summary

This position is assigned to the Electrical shop within the Engineering service line for the Nebraska Western Iowa Health Care System. Incumbent performs preventative maintenance, installations, troubleshooting and repairs on electrical systems having voltages up to 480 VAC which include: feeder and branch circuits, light fixtures, controls and equipment, electrical panels, signal circuits for radio and nurse call, intercoms and medical gas pressure alarms.

Duties

The VA Midwest Health Care Network advocates for a Whole Health System of care in each of the Medical Centers. Major duties listed but not limited to:
  • Perform work in accordance with the National Electrical Code, NFPA, OSHA, and ASHRAE while meeting the standard of JACO and AWE
  • Install conduit, conductors, and electrical devices
  • Troubleshoot and repair various building service equipment items such as one (1) 100KW Caterpillar and one (1) 370KW Caterpillar stand-by emergency generators, smoke-eater devices, hammer drills and electric fans
  • Work from building prints, sketches, and manufacturer\'s manuals to lay out and plan work
  • Use hand tools and test equipment normally used in the electrical trade in troubleshooting and repairing electrical equipment
  • Perform Monthly Generator operational test and automatic transfer switches for a period of 30 minutes according to Joint Commission requirements. EC.02.05.07, EP 4
  • Urge or advise other workers to follow instructions received from supervisors, and to meet deadlines
  • Assure that safety and housekeeping rules are followed (for example, assuring that limits of safe machine operation are not exceeded and that all tools are used properly)
  • Report to supervisors on status and progress of work, and causes of work delays; Attending design reviews, punchlist walkthroughs, commissioning training and providing technical feedback
  • Monitor daily work orders, prioritizing work to meet supervisors deadlines and routing work to shop personnel

Working Conditions: Employee must work outside and inside. Outside work is occasionally required during extremely bad weather. Repairs are frequently in areas that are wet, dirty, dusty, greasy, extremely hot, noisy, on scaffolding or cranes at heights of 30 or more feet, in close quarters such as manholes, crawlspaces, and above ceilings and in attics, or foul smelling occasionally being exposed to the possibility of injury from falling, electrical shock, burns, and rotary devices, such as electrical motors. Frequent exposure to cuts and bruises is a possibility. Incumbent will be required to wear appropriate personal protective equipment as necessary to accomplish tasks in a safe manner.

A lead at this level would: pass on to other workers the instructions received from supervisors and get work started; work along with other workers and setting the pace; demonstrate proper work methods; maintain a current knowledge, and answering questions of other workers on procedures, policies, written instructions, and other directives (for example, technical orders); manage and help train employees on proper steps in completing work orders and associated tasks; oversee management and proper delegation of work to shop personnel in terms of corrective and preventative maintenance; perform preventative maintenance, installations, troubleshooting and repairs on electrical systems having voltages up to 480 VAC which include: feeder and branch circuits, light fixtures, controls and equipment, electrical panels, signal circuits for radio and nurse call, intercoms and medical gas pressure alarms; interpret building plans, blueprints, wiring diagrams and maintenance manuals; install, maintain, troubleshoot and repair electrical wiring systems and associated fixtures, controls and equipment in industrial, institutional and office buildings; require experience maintaining and modernizing newer and older electrical systems; performs maintenance and repair of all VA Healthcare System fire alarm and smoke detection systems and require knowledge in accordance with all applicable codes including NEC, JCAHO, OSHA and specific manufacturer\'s recommendations.

Critical Skills Incentive (CSI): This occupation is being considered for a Veterans Health Administration enterprise-wide Critical Skills Incentive (CSI). Candidates may be eligible for a lump sum CSI. The amount of lump sum CSI is determined based on appointment date and may be pro-rated as determined by the end date of the CSI.
