About Rivian

Rivian is on a mission to keep the world adventurous forever. This goes for the emissions-free Electric Adventure Vehicles we build, and the curious, courageous souls we seek to attract.

As a company, we constantly challenge what\xe2\x80\x99s possible, never simply accepting what has always been done. We reframe old problems, seek new solutions and operate comfortably in areas that are unknown. Our backgrounds are diverse, but our team shares a love of the outdoors and a desire to protect it for future generations.
Role Summary

Reliability is at the core of Electric Adventure Vehicles. This position is in Tustin, CA, at the center of Rivian\xe2\x80\x99s Engineering and R&D hub in Southern California. As an Electrical Engineer on the Tustin Failure Analysis team, you will play a key role in generating insight through conducting failure analysis investigations for all Rivian products from the vehicle to component level. The Electrical FA Engineer\'s primary responsibility is to perform both deep dive and rapid response triage level analyses/investigations of electronic, electrical, electromechanical, energy storage systems, and charging hardware failures.
Responsibilities

  • Be an integral part of the FA team in the Tustin FA lab. Work closely with other FA engineers on the team both in Tustin, CA and in the production facility Normal, IL.
  • Perform both deep dive and rapid response triage level analyses/investigations of electronic, electrical, electromechanical, energy storage systems, and charging hardware failures.
  • Have a basic understanding of electrical and mechanical testing methods and their limitations, and a working knowledge of the common equipment and instruments used for failure analysis including: optical, acoustic and scanning microscopy; micro and macro photography; radiography (2D, CT); X-ray fluorescence (XRF); energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), Fourier-transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy.
  • Collaborate with existing engineering teams (e.g., low-voltage electronics, power conversion, power train, battery cell, materials development, etc.) to help define the needs for hardware development and testing; identify where assistance may be needed in the development of manufacturing processes and/or validation of predictive models, etc. Maintain a constant dialogue on the existing and growing capabilities of the FA team.
  • Perform failure analysis activities for incidents originating from reliability testing for new product development and from fielded systems. Assure that root cause is identified at the most detailed level.
  • Prepare failure analysis reports with exceptional visualizations and direct the communication and presentation of findings to project teams and at executive reviews.
  • Work with reliability engineering and testing to recreate failure modes that are intermittent or challenging to replicate. Utilize environmental testing equipment, HALT and other methods to precipitate failures as a precursor to in depth failure analyses. Use results (e.g., historical data) to develop and propose test plans to cross functional teams. Drive execution and completion of approved test plans.
  • When applicable, travel to support field failure analyses and other work-related activities. Estimated travel is less than 10% annually.
Qualifications
  • BS/MS in Electrical, Mechanical, Materials Engineering or similar and 2+ years relevant industrial experience, preferably in the automotive industry.
  • Strong academic background and/or experience in the testing and analysis of vehicle hardware components including EEE components, printed circuit board assemblies (PCBAs), energy storage sub-systems and batteries and the materials associated with these. Candidates with other areas of expertise and electrical FA experience may also be considered.
  • Experience performing failure analysis investigations is desirable.
  • Hands on experience with the application of, and hands on use of electrical test equipment (such as curve trace, oscilloscopes, optical microscopy, time-domain reflectometry, parametric and signal analyzers) and other disassembly tools (powered and unpowered saws, etc.) for failure analysis.
  • Hands on experience with other materials characterization equipment such as optical microscopes, scanning electron microscopes (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), scanning acoustic microscopes (C-SAM), cross sectioning equipment, decapsulating chemicals, CT-scanning, 2D X-ray, etc. is desirable.
  • Experience of preparing formal reports summarizing analysis data and results is required. Experience presenting complex data to various levels of professionals, from engineers to executives.
  • A desire to create a respectful, fun, inclusive and inspiring team and company culture is a must.
