Oregon State University is seeking a DSI (Design for Social Impact) Academic Director. This is a full-time 1.00 FTE , 12-month, professional faculty position, which will be administered by the Honors College.
This will be a 3-year administrative appointment, with the option for renewal.
The Design for Social Impact (DSI) initiative is a university-wide program. The DSI experience for students, faculty and employers/clients includes comprehensive educational plans supporting undergraduate and graduate students, multiple curricular choices, and experiential learning through real-world client-based projects. DSI efforts support OSU\xe2\x80\x99s strategic initiatives advancing equity, inclusion, and diversity and will provide employees with the resources and opportunities to understand and further these goals.
DSI faculty from across the University create and deliver highly experiential curricula centered on design, innovation, and social good. A central theme is the betterment of society through solutions aligned with the OSU Strategic Plan and signature areas of revolutionary earth systems science, leading health and wellness, and advancing economic prosperity and social progress. Illustrating this commitment, OSU\xe2\x80\x99s Strategic Plan (4.0) states, \xe2\x80\x9c We will be visionary in our integration of the arts, humanities, sciences, and engineering. The arts and humanities are core to the University\xe2\x80\x99s mission in their own right, and an education that integrates the arts, humanities, and STEM fields enables students to think critically, engage meaningfully, and successfully address contemporary [social, cultural, scientific, and engineering] challenges.\xe2\x80\x9d The plan proposes that we take action to \xe2\x80\x9cmake strategic investments in interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary scholarship, teaching and engagement\xe2\x80\x9d through developing programs \xe2\x80\x9cthat advance the integration of the arts, humanities, and STEM in research and education.\xe2\x80\x9d A key approach to accomplish these aims is to \xe2\x80\x9cFormalize mechanisms for transcript visible articulation of experiential learning.\xe2\x80\x9d
The DSI Academic Director (AD) leads and coordinates efforts of the participating colleges to build strong, nationally recognized undergraduate and graduate degree programs at Oregon State University. The Academic Director will report to the Dean of the Honors College and will work closely with the Deans, Associate Deans, School and Department Heads, and Faculty that are engaged in DSI. Inaugural colleges involved in the effort include the College of Business (COB), College of Liberal Arts (CLA), and the College of Engineering (COE). The DSI initiative includes a university-wide undergraduate certificate, offered in Corvallis, which is planned to expand to include online students through OSU\xe2\x80\x99s Ecampus. A BS degree in Engineering Design and Innovation within COE will also be overseen by the AD. The AD will work closely with COE designee (e.g., Associate Dean for Undergraduate Program) in this capacity. Future work could include expanding the number of focus areas in the certificate, offering micro-credentials, and adding a graduate certificate and professional education offerings.
The AD leads the overall DSI Initiative, operations and strategic planning in support of the College\xe2\x80\x99s and OSU\xe2\x80\x99s goals and mission; leads expanding the DSI academic curricula, manages the budget of the program and allocates resources; establishes, implements, and evaluates the program\xe2\x80\x99s goals and policies; and makes decisions and solves problems related to the program. The AD will supervise individuals taking on other managerial elements of DSI operations, including overseeing multidisciplinary student projects and engaging with both internal and external clients.
