Director of Technology



Overview

The Director of Technology serves as a strategic and visionary leader responsible for overseeing the school's technology department and ensuring that all systems, infrastructure, and digital tools effectively support Boyd-Buchanan School's mission and goals. This position manages the personnel, operations, and resources of the technology department, providing direction, supervision, and evaluation of staff responsible for daily technology functions. The Director ensures that technology initiatives are aligned with institutional priorities, promote innovation, and maintain a secure and reliable digital environment for teaching, learning, and operations.

Key Responsibilities



Leadership and Department Management



Leads and manages the technology department, including staff responsible for instructional technology, device support, and systems administration. Provides direction, guidance, and performance management for technology team members. Oversees departmental operations, ensuring effective communication, accountability, and collaboration within the team and across departments. Serves as the primary point of contact between the school's leadership and the technology department. Evaluates departmental structure, staffing, and workflows to ensure efficiency and responsiveness to school needs.

Strategic Planning



Develops and implements a long-term technology strategy aligned with school goals and best practices in education and information technology. Stays informed about emerging trends in educational technology, networking, and cybersecurity. Reviews and updates technology-related policies, including Acceptable Use Policies and data security procedures. Works with academic and operational leaders to identify technology needs and prioritize projects accordingly. Develops annual departmental goals and budgets in collaboration with the Business Office and Head of School.

Oversight of Instructional Technology and Professional Learning



Oversees the staff member(s) responsible for instructional technology and professional learning for faculty and staff. Ensures the instructional technology initiatives and professional development programs align with departmental goals and school priorities. Reviews documentation, training resources, and program effectiveness, providing guidance and support to staff as needed.

Device Management and Support



Provide daily technical support for faculty and student devices, including laptops, tablets, and classroom media displays. Maintains an inventory of school-owned devices. Ensures repairs are completed (either on-site or through a third party) in a timely manner. Monitors help desk software and provides timely response and resolution to tickets. Plans for device distribution and collection for faculty, staff, and students. Manages campus printing and copier system using Papercut software.

Technology Operations Oversight

While the Director may not personally perform all technical functions, they oversee staff and external partners who are responsible for:

Network Management: Maintaining stability, security, and performance of the campus network, including partnerships with Managed Service Providers (MSPs). Cloud Services Administration: Managing user accounts and settings across platforms such as Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, Blackbaud, Mosyle, JAMF School, and Clever. Software and Systems Management: Overseeing the implementation and maintenance of systems such as door access, security cameras, intercom, visitor management, emergency alerts, and digital signage. Web and Communications Technology: Coordinating with Marketing and Communications on school website updates and related systems. Cybersecurity and Compliance: Ensures the school's technology environment adheres to cybersecurity standards and that student data is handled according to federal regulations.

Ensures the school's technology environment adheres to current cybersecurity standards and privacy regulations. Oversees implementation of safeguards for student data, digital communication, and network access.

Qualifications



Education and Experience



Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Educational Technology, or a related field required; Master's degree preferred. Demonstrated experience managing technology teams and leading strategic initiatives. Strong understanding of network administration, cybersecurity, and cloud-based systems. Experience in educational settings preferred. Apple certification (ACSP, ACT, or equivalent) preferred; experience with Apple device management required.

Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills. Ability to oversee both technical and operational aspects of a department. Strategic thinker with project management and organizational skills. Ability to translate technical concepts for non-technical audiences.
